As Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles will be invited to the White House to be congratulated by President Trump. Several players have already indicated they will decline the invitation.

If I were invited to the White House for a similar purpose by any of the presidents who have served during my lifetime, I'd attend, even though some of them instituted policies that had profound negative impacts on my life. I'd view it in much the same way as the military when they say, "You salute the rank, not the man." You don't get invited to the White House every day, and you can't pick and choose who's in office when you do.

Liberals, would you show up at the White House to be honored by Trump? Reagan? Nixon? Either of the Bushes? Eisenhower, who decreed that homosexuals were totally prohibited from federal employment of any kind?

Conservatives, would you allow yourselves to be congratulated by Obama? Clinton? Carter? LBJ? Kennedy?

Comparing Trump to "Reagan? Nixon? Either of the Bushes? Eisenhower" is a joke.

Sounds like a question Hannity on Fox News would ask.

Both Bushes have been openly against Trump, both before he was elected and after. I have no doubt that if Reagan and Eisenhower were alive that they'd be just as contemptuous of him.

Well you can't speak for Reagan or Eisenhower can you.
Also today is a very diffrent world, to the one they lived in.
Not all homosexuals, bisexuals, Americans, or people around the globe.
Follow you in your blind contempt of President Trump.

    Uh, Lumpy?

I am not comparing Trump to anyone.

I'm just asking, which presidents would you decline an invitation from?

So far you haven't even made it clear that you'd decline an invitation from Trump.

Both Bushes are biased against Trump because in their minds he "stole" the Presidency from Jeb, I'd say. With that baggage you simply can't say their animus is strictly because of his politics.

If I were invited I would go. The President represents the US and being rude to him is a slight against the entire country and frankly, it's petty.

Wow, maybe I should have titled this thread "How Bitter Are You?"

Once again guys, THIS IS NOT ABOUT TRUMP. It's about Trump AND EVERYBODY ELSE. But mostly about everybody else, since nearly all of you have made your feelings about Trump pretty clear already, in 18 million other threads.

The concept is very simple. I'd like to find out if the liberals here hate only Trump, or hate all Republican presidents (and if the conservatives hate all Democratic presidents) to the extent that they'd turn down an invitation to be honored at the White House. Hence the title of the thread.

Replying only about Trump really doesn't tell me much.

Many thanks to those who "got it" and replied in a way that addressed the question.

Like in many sports there are liberals & conservatives, dictators and communists (participants & leaders). Take the olympics for example. We have both Koreas united for the winter games. Sports-win or lose are a great opportunity to come together. Politics aside, I would gladly accept a congratulations by anyone offering (in varying offices or authority). I might even defect if I was in an awful Country like North Korea!

Back in the day when I earned championship medals or trophies they were hard fought! I am sure if the person knew I was GAY, he might have an issue presenting it to me. You see, they were really assholes back then! I just competed naturally like anyone and accepted my award[s] without any personal issues getting in the way. This is one reason why, I CHOOSE to be discreet in my business and other activities. I want to be judged on my skills and merit. Not my excess soy intake or sexuality!

Yes, I would accept an invitation from the President of the United States to come to the White House to be honored. I know myself well enough to know that if I were invited for such an honor, I would not be able to decline. It simply would not be possible for me to stay away. No matter how much I might rant and rave against any given president, I would proudly accept congratulations from that president. I would consider it selfish to decline, perhaps even borderline treasonous.

I'm a democrat, thought Bush 43 was stupid, but I'd take an invitation from him or any past president. However dirty politics are, the White House and the President always manages to maintain a level of decency, because they are merely a cheerleader for the country. All they need to do is appeal to the best in us, even when they themselves are flawed, or their policies misguided. The current president actively appeals to our worst instincts, and brings shame to our country. An invitation to this White House is as much an honor as getting Employee of the Month at Hooters, or a degree from Trump University - not worth selling my soul for.

Many Philadelphia Eagles have already said they won’t follow tradition and visit the White House in the wake of their historic Super Bowl victory, CNN reports. They point to Donald Trump and his divisive comments as the reason they won’t participate.

Safety Malcolm Jenkins told CNN “Nah, I personally do not anticipate attending.” His teammate, wide receiver Torrey Smith, said earlier this week:

We read the news just like everyone else. You see Donald Trump tweet something ... We have those conversations in the locker room, just like everyone else does in the workplace. We're very informed about what goes on, and we're trying to continue to educate ourselves. I'm not saying we're right about everything, but we're willing to figure out what is right. We're willing to work with people to find the best way to move forward, because there are problems and we're not shy about speaking up about them.

Defensive player Chris Long skipped the White House visit last year, too, when he was on the Patriots. When asked about this year’s visit on a podcast appearance, Long said “No, I’m not going to the White House. Are you kidding me?”

    That said, I'd go*.
If I can figure out what to wear.
I'm challenged by fashion, anyhow, so the quest would be something that makes a political statement.

No bunk you are a disgrace to the USA with your unjustified hatred of President Trump. You are disrespectful for no legitimate reason and you are a treasonous traitor to this great country for voting for that crooked power hungry incompetent whore, Hillary rotten Clinton in 2016. You definitely need to be permanently booted off this site because you are among the lowest of the low and you are a horrible embarrassment to the gay community. Now do everyone a long overdue favor and go take a flying leap off of the Tappan Zee Bridge.
