Health Experts Say PrEP Is Terribly Underused

"According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Truvada would be appropriate for about 1.2 million people in the U.S. — including sex workers and roughly 25 percent of gay men. Gilead Scientific, Truvada’s California-based manufacturer, says there are only about 145,000 active prescriptions for HIV prevention use, the AP reports."

"PrEP/Truvada lowering the risk of contracting HIV by 90 percent if taken daily"

Seems like half the profiles on Grindr claim they are on Prep.

    Public Service Announcement:

I have a friend who is now HIV+ because he believed someone who said he was on Prep.

Remember: Prep protects him, not you from him.

He may not be on Prep. Or maybe he was already HIV+ before he started taking Prep (and didn't known it).

In the same way: If he's going to be unsafe with you, he was likely unsafe with many before you.
You're now not just exposed to him, but to all of them.

Apparently, Truvada costs about $1300/month for those without insurance, or those whose insurance won't provide the drug as a prophylaxis. Most people cannot afford that. If Gilead Scientific would make the cost affordable I'm sure many more people would use it.
