I had never heard of this before. For me it seems to be just the opposite. I suffer in the winter from a lack of light and use a
NatureBright SunTouch Plus Light and Ion Therapy Lamp and has been very effective to keep me healthy.

Human skin can make large amounts of vitamin D when lots of skin is exposed and the sun is high in the sky. Your body is designed to get the vitamin D it needs by producing it when your bare skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D plays a substantial role in the regulation of calcium and maintenance of phosphorus levels in the blood, two factors that are extremely important for maintaining healthy bones. ... In adults, vitamin D deficiency manifests as osteomalacia (softening of the bones) or osteoporosis as frequently seen in elderly who don't go outside.

Overprotective Mothers who keep their kids out of the sun and lathered in sunscreen are having problems with the kids developing rickets. Rickets is a condition that results in weak or soft bones in children. Symptoms include bowed legs, stunted growth, bone pain, large forehead, and trouble sleeping. Complications may include bone fractures, muscle spasms, an abnormally curved spine, or intellectual disability. Countries like Canada, the UK, Ireland and Australia are seeing serious increases in Rickets and colon cancer.

Kids not playing outside who are glued to electronics is a serious issue.

Of course, in Canada, like most nordic countries, Milk is laced with vitamin D because in the winter months it's nearly impossible to get the necessary sun exposure.
