Florida lawmakers approved a measure that would raise the minimum age for purchasing most firearms and devote millions of dollars to amping up school security, including training and arming school employees.

Lawmakers in the Florida House voted 67-50 to approve the legislation, which raises the minimum age to purchase rifles from 18 to 21 and imposes a three-day wait period for most purchases of those guns, The Associated Press reported.

The bill also creates new mental health programs for schools and aims to keep guns out of the hands of individuals who show signs of mental illness.

The legislation now goes to Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) to be signed.

This is a false statement. The bill really doesn't control GUNS. It actually controls PEOPLE who may purchase guns. But assault rifle sales continue as they are. Along with large automatic rifle magazines.

So that the military-based assault weapons used in these massacres are still available as before. Just that people identified as having mental health issues (and how efficent will THAT system be?) can't purchase them.

But the same weapons will still be sold and on the street. Some "Gun Control Bill"! Nothing more than window dressing, to make Republicans look like they're taking action on this issue. Something they can put in campaign advertising (but only in the correct markets).

It also doesn't prohibit 18-20 year olds from having guns or using them, only purchasing them. They can easily just have an older adult buy the guns for them. lol It is a pretty stupid law, if you ask me and will not keep any guns out of the hands of anyone. Guns isn't really the problem in the first place. They need to beef up security in schools, so that people like this can not even get in the school without passing through security. They also need to work at curbing the desire to kill in the first place. Even if someone doesn't have any access to any guns. if you don't change their desire to kill, they can just as easily take a car and drive it 100 mph into a whole group of students in the parking lot and kill them all. People are really naive, if they even think that getting rid of all guns will stop them from mass killings. You got to work at curbing the desire to even want to do killings because there are many other ways to mass kill besides guns.

Raising the minimum age to 21 is very inadequate. It is time that lawmakers stop considering 21 to be the end all and raise the minimum age to purchase rifles up to 25 years. A 25 year old is more mature and not quite as unpredictable with their emotions as a still somewhat immature 21 year old.

Let's raise the minimum voting age back up to 21. Similar arguments would justify it.

No the voting age should permanently remain at 18 no legitimate need to raise the voting age however 18 and 19 year olds should be encouraged to stop being so complacent and take a stronger interest in government and politics. That is after all part of learning. The thing that has hindered the maturity and learning among both 18 and 19 year olds is all this nonsensical right of passage bullshit by treating everything like one gigantic party.
