An Electro-Blob Under Africa May Be 'Ground Zero' for Earth's Magnetic Field Reversal

"The planet's magnetic field is generated by the churning of liquid iron in the core. Without the field, life on the planet would be much different, if not impossible: This invisible shield protects the Earth's surface from deadly cosmic radiation.

Right now, the field is undergoing a weakening, and no one is sure why. "

Past data suggests the earth's magnetic field is anomalously weak for about 10,000 years before and after a geomagnetic reversal, so it seems it's not likely to happen anytime soon. And really, the reversal itself wouldn't cause anything bad to happen, aside from making every compass on earth point the opposite way.

But of course when the magnetic field weakens, more cosmic radiation reaches the earth's surface. It's been proposed by some that this may have given evolution a boost at various points in history by causing more mutations. Others claim that every mass extinction event in earth's history has been accompanied by a geomagnetic reversal.
