California has become the world’s sixth largest economy.
    cHPDustIOuYNdeNJO-P0lnSMdSFXA2P5AGpOhpFn

California is the world’s wealthiest sub-national entity - and its sixth largest economy, between the UK and France. Now is the perfect time for it to step in. To paraphrase Truman, California “must take immediate and resolute action”. It has made some headway in the international arena over the last decade. But it has been punching beneath its weight. California is the modern version of Kumbhakarna, the Hindu giant cursed to fight for six months of every year - and sleep for the remaining six.
    California is bound to lead

California is a cradle foreign affairs experiment. Many signatories of the state’s original constitution, which was ratified in 1849 prior to California’s admission to the Union in 1850, had an international background. They were born in Mexico, France or Spain, such as Miguel Pedrorena or Pierre Sainsevain. But the constitution neglected international affairs. However, the practice was starting to germinate elsewhere. In 1857, the Australian state of Victoria became the first to set up a representation abroad, in London.

Throughout its history, California has attracted people from all over the world. But it took until Governor Pat Brown’s administration, from 1959 to 1967, for it to grasp the relevance of an international agenda. It opened offices in London and Tokyo, since discontinued, to strengthen international trade. Then it 1977, the state established an internal Office of International Trade. In 1999, it nominated a Secretary of Foreign Affairs to strengthen political and economic ties with international partners. Under Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger (2003-2011) and Jerry Brown (2011- present), it made some important achievements around trade and climate change.

Wait a minute! I thought the Trump followers here are saying California's economy is collapsing, the worst in the US. How can it therefore be the 6th largest in the world? Richer and more prosperous than most of the world's 193 sovereign nations? And any other US State?

And is it below Red Mississippi, Lousiana, Alabama, Arkansas? Yeah. Amazing what Trumpsters will try to want us to believe. icon_rolleyes.gif

Duh, the state has fewer people over 65 than the national average due to so many illegal aliens and H1N1 aliens. Since so many illegal aliens don't pay taxes, the tax burden shifts to retirees who then move out of the state. Illegal aliens working in California's underground cash and weed economy earn more than retirees.

Liberal Facebook and Google who gave the 2016 election to Trump are headquartered in California.

So California leads the US Economy at the expense of the rest of you Liberals so go live there.

I lived in Los Angeles (Venice Beach) for 20 years to the day. Had I not lived at the beach, no way I would have lasted that long. I see no reason to live in Los Angeles other than the weather and the beach, otherwise it's a nightmare. The roads are a mess, especially the freeways, and traffic is a nightmare. The general mentality is everybody constantly trying to keep up with The Joneses --- you're never rich enough, successful enough, or beautiful enough. It's exhausting.

I love living in Arizona so much more --- Clean air, beautiful freeways, minimal traffic, low property taxes, very affordable cost of living, and beautiful weather. Not to mention that people on down-to-earth and friendly

What is there to laugh about? Homelessness is a complicated issue. There are many reasons why people are homeless. On a regular basis, we have the police go in with the help of organizations that help the homeless and remove them, clean up the area. Most come back the next day. Many of the homeless are mentally ill. Many of the local homeless actually want to live in the forest. Some have lived in the forest longer than I have lived here. I don't have a problem with them living there. The ones that stay are generally happy to live there even though there are resources to help them have housing. That being said, the increase in homelessness over the last several years, I think many of those people could use and want more help. I do think we should do more to provide the homeless with mental health services. I think some of them have been living outdoors so long that it would be difficult for them to live inside again. Living in the forest is not really safe. We have rattlesnakes, scorpions, bears, mountain lions, etc. and it must be stressful and difficult way to live outside. Some live in a riverbed that has a couple dams above. If water gets released, it could result in people dying. I think it would be better for them to have housing but it is not an easy task.

Things don't seem to be progressing, for the progressives, after sixteen years.

what a load - this appears to be written by another one of those people magazine types who constantly author articles that begin with the "10 best" of whatever

you might find it enlightening to learn the sun really does rise and set over more than just california - this is another example of manipulating the facts to give the appearance that california is a utopia which it hardly is

california has a population of 40mm - the u.s.a. has a population of 340mm - that leaves about 300mm people who dont see that utopia

it has always been one of the largest economies in the world for at least the last 30 years - you might be interested to know there are probably 20 metro areas within the u.s.a. with economies similar in that they are larger than those of other countries

its economy fluctuates like that of any other state in the nation - were it not for the tech companies in the northern part of the state it would not be doing or have done nearly as well as it has - in fact, over the last 20+ years, it has lost a good bit of its diversity in many industries due to high taxes, high cost of living, and excessive regulation - that is a well known fact conveniently not mentioned in this article

many believe that will be the states ultimate demise and there is reason it should give the citizens pause - but in the end its their choice and for those who remain they will pay the ultimate price if the experiment totally fails - thats the beauty of our country - we have 50 great states and individuals can pick and choose where they want to be if they are dissatisfied with the policies of any particular one

i lived in lax for almost a decade - it wasnt for me and i was glad to get out - i have several friends who have remained and they regularly bemoan the costs associated with crime, housing, homelessness, poverty, etc. - i can honestly say i have never seen abject poverty that rivals any third world country anywhere else in this country except lax

i would think after 16 years you would certainly be questioning your methods of "helping" - but as long as youre willing to pay for it i suppose its ok and we should wish you good luck - just dont expect the rest of the country to pay for it

Meanwhile, California is in the midst of yet another fiscal crisis. It’s fast becoming the mother of all welfare magnet states while welcoming a surge in illegal immigration. In January, Gov. Brown announced a $1.6 billion deficit by next summer. The total estimated public debt of the Golden State is $1.3 trillion.

California Leads U.S. Economy, Away From Trump - and in the case of Facebook - toward bankruptcy.
