Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed a bill allowing religious groups to discriminate against gays and lesbians in adoptions. The Church of Rome lobbied hard for this bill. In a time when discrimination again LGBTQs is being overturned and many state courts have ruled that private and religious groups can't discriminate against people in public accommodations, this ruling is disheartening, to say the least. The Church of Rome issued a statement that "it would bring more adoption services to the state and allow crucial faith-based agencies to continue their decades-long tradition of caring for Oklahoma's most vulnerable children." Secular adoption agencies could do the job just as well and still serve everyone. In addition, discrimination against gays and lesbians mean fewer children will be adopted. Some day the Church of Rome will realize the damage they have caused, as human rights and civil rights surge forward and inquisitional repression falls by the wayside.
