Help! I have a bet with my Dad!

I came home this weekend to see my family. And during lunch, my dad was saying how much weight I've been losing (coz of stress from work), and that hoepfully I wasn't doing drugs or what not.

For his peace of mind, he made a bet with me. He said that he wants me to weigh 15 more pounds and have defined abs by the 28th of April. And if I do, he'll send me to Santorini Greece in an all expense paid trip!!! (Santorini is my ultimate dream getaway which I have wanted for so long btw)

So this week, I've been stuffing myself with all the protein I can get (two bagels with peanut butter, 2 bananas, 2 Balance Protein bars, and 3 protein shakes in ONE day. But I don't seem to be gaining weight!!!

I'm getting frustrated. What do I need to do to gain weight without looking flabby? What diet and routine do you recommend that can help me achieve my goal in eight weeks? ANYTHING?! (that's legal at least)

Um, bagels and bananas are not protein. And you need real protein, like MEAT.

eating excess protein by itself doesn't work unless you work hard enough to get all of it running and placed in your system. You'll basically waste a lot of that away unless you're working out a few times a day as well.

Also, try and stick to foods as opposed to shakes, nutrients in general work better as a food than a pill or powder. The bars are normally fine cause many get protein from peanuts or the sort.

    Good Luck.

I agree. If "two bagels with peanut butter, 2 bananas, 2 Balance Protein bars, and 3 protein shakes in ONE day" is all you are eating in one day, it's no wonder you are loosing weight. You need REAL food. Bars and Shakes are SUPPLEMENTS, something you take IN ADDITION to real food.

    And lift.

    LOL....

Were you tempted to to lie? icon_smile.gif

I think gaining 15lb is far easier than trying to covert a flute player into a carpet muncher. icon_smile.gif

    Hell yeah...

but I stared him down with a you really think that would work, he said he would keep it for himself...I pointed out he couldn't use a mac...he tried to use it became really frustrated and 2 weeks later ended up bringing it back to the store where they wouldn't return it but after him complaining they swapped it for a PC

and I went out and used interest free finance to get my own...that really pushed his buttons

and I tell that story everytime he tries something that stupid again

Few times a day? Er, no. If the goal is to gain lean muscle mass the body does that with the food in the REST between work outs, If you are lifting twice a day then the body has no chance. So either lift three times a week, or do body part splits so that you can hit the gym more often. But twice a day, no.

No offense, but I think it seems a little strange that your father is interested in your abs.

Sounds like you're wanting to gain weight and keep the weight off at the same time. Good luck.

Personally, I'd either choose to put on weight, or get defined abs. Since you look pretty thin from your profile picture, you're closer to getting the defined abs than you are to gaining the 15 lbs. What if you gained only 7 lbs while keeping defined abs? Think he'd cave and let you go on the trip anyway? Your profile says you're the youngest in your family. I'm sure by now you've learned to use that to your advantage, lol. A pound a week while keeping body fat % low is more reasonable than gaining 2 lbs of lean muscle / week while keeping body fat % down.

Agreeing to an arrangement like this is yet another recipe for disaster. Your dad sounds desperate and concerned. Sounds like a loving father (I'm happy for you, and a little jealous). Taking him up on his "bet" would be selfish and thoughtless on your part.

Why not save up your own money and buy that trip for yourself? I can assure you that you'd have a better time.

Stress from work is causing you to lose that much weight? Are you sure? What type of job do you have that creates that level of stress at 23 years of age? According to your profile, you're laid back and spoiled ... so what's the problem?

Perhaps you should go see your physician. Sounds like it's time for a check-up.

If you're doing drugs, stop! No need to tell us one way or the other, but I've been through that gauntlet and, trust me, just stop. If that's not your problem, eat better; lay off the carbs and go for well-balanced meals. Also, increase meat protein consumption. Regardless of what vegetarians may tell you, human beings are omnivores. We don't develop properly w/o a well balance diet of grains, veggies and MEAT/dairy. A rare few can gain mass w/o eating meat, but that's the exception, not the rule. Get more sleep.

I hope my advice helps, but only a physician and nutritionist can tell you what's truly happening within that sexy body of yours.

Well let me say, if it had been me, I would have sought the best possible
compromise, no agreement until several verbal revisions...... one of them being flexibility depending on your preparation.

I do applaud your efforts and agree with some of the nutritional suggestions above, its helped me with my 6 pack development (which varies between good and not)...

What I'm concerned about is your ultimate outcome. If you improve your
body, but fall short of the "success" as dictated by your Dad, you will consider the effort a failure. I'd negotiate a fallback position, maybe he will pay for a portion of the trip if you make a degree of progress.

    Keep us informed!

Lol, yeah-it does sound strange huh, but I think he included that bit in there coz he knew chances are I'd be shirtless the whole time in Santorini. My dad's just a great guy.

My problem is I'm afraid to gain bad fat coz I've been fat and never liked the feeling. For three months in 07, I was 170 lbs~ and I hated it. It was alot of work for me to get rid of 30 lbs of lard. Now, I eat what I just mentioned plus chicken for lunch and tuna for dinner. That's it.

So, is it ok if I lift weights three times a week and do cardio twice a week or will doing cardio offset my weight-gain?

And btw, the stress I talked about was more from living by myself for the first time~ away from my family-and the thought of failing at being independent and mature. Most of my friends tried living on their own for a while before throwing in the towel and either coming back home to live off of their parents' fortune or have their parents pay for their "independent" lifestyle. I refuse to be that way.
    .
All your help is much appreciated. ONly thing separating me and Santorini is 15 pounds and six pack abs. I knew RJers would pull through! Thanks thanks thanks.

    OH I HAVE A STORY!

When my little brother graduated high school my father got him a lap top as a graduation present. I was openly envious of the lap top. My fathers’ girlfriend said “Well maybe when you graduate something your father will get you a lap top.” I felt that was an extremely shity thing to say considering I had a GED and was in college. When I complained to my boyfriend about the comment he went out and me a kick ass lap top (my lap top could kick my little brothers lap tops’ ass) he told me to tell my fathers girlfriend that I got this one for giving spectacular head.

Ok yal can go back to the real topic of the thread now.

If you just stuff yourself with excess cals you're gonna lose all your derfinition and lose the bet anyway
... so you'll be home and get fat ... not a good outcome
what you need to do is increase the cals ... mostly protein and complex carbs
    and LIFT!!!!

You're gonna have to hit the weights fairly heavy
and intensely because you're also going to have to replace calorie depletion from cardio with weight training

I would run, swim, eat REAL protein (Meat and fish) and work on ab workouts like crunches and things. Of course I bet that was already said over 26 times before I even posted, so I don't know why I post, but it's my two cent's worth.
