I was scanning through a thread entitled, What makes you Cry, and one poster responded, “I cry every time I look at the appalling English on this site!” Apart from him, I haven’t heard anyone address this issue.

Now, I’m not talking about a post that reads awkwardly because the author’s first language clearly isn’t English. I’m not talking about the stupid acronyms, the abbreviations, the slang or the typos. I’m talking about posts that read as though the writer is a retarded stroke victim. Here’s my attempt at recreating such a post:

Ummmm ok exus me WHAT?? Your not the only decency and the skill to even top it dude! But I sometimes have what you never do, LOL. I dont even care about cardio because until we have to take care of EACHOTHER! First and only. Its just sad

    You get the point.

So what’s going on here? Anybody?

Excuse me? WHAT!? Is this really a post bashing another RJ member? Are you aware that this action violates the TOS that you agreed to follow? You cannot make fun of another member on this scale. Sure, Pattison uses different grammar and sentence structure, so what? He has English as a second language first of all and second, he has a very unique way of expressing himself. That is his deal.

Your little inquiry here may start out addressing a man's grammar usage and end up bashing that man's intelligence, that man's contribution to the threads, and that man's character. Cease and desist now.

I read the threads all the time and I do not see an overwhelming majority of posters using grammar like that you listed. How can you start a thread introducing "RealJock Speak", when there is none, just a few members who express themselves differently? You are calling people out with this is what you are doing especially with the mention of a name.

wow. i don't even know who he is. i assumed that the guy who mentioned him brought him up because he is an example of what i was describing, and had some explanation to my question.

good thing there are guys like you here to rush to his defense.

Every once in a while, I question specific things in people's posts, but I don't think it does any good. If someone can't spell or use proper grammar and punctuation, pointing it out to that person is probably not going to help. RealJock is not school.

It's not as if RealJock is the only site where this is an issue.

Some RealJock posters consistently write clearly. Others don't and seem unconcerned about it. Many are somewhere in the middle.

Some of those who are the worst offenders probably can't be helped. Others might be able to write more clearly if they took the time to read through their posts and focus on the goal of expressing themselves as clearly as possible before pressing "SUBMIT," but . . . what are you going to do?

Anyway, writing well isn't butch. A real Real Jock doesn't care if other people can understand him.

I'm probably going to get kicked off for saying this, but I have expressed my concern with the unfairness on RJ, and it seemed to have been ignored.

Pattison has rapped a few guys on here around his little finger. GG being one. Pattison is very well capable of speaking as well as anyone on here. He just speaks the way he does to irritate people. In Fact it has been said that he has even admitted to this in a private email to another member on here.

GG, what is his first language?

Anyway Robadob, When I read your post I just assumed you were talking about Pattison as he is just about the only one on RJ that does what you say.

    This is so Orwellian doubleplusenglishrectifyspeak.
Probably some of us just type away so fast because they're catching up with what's on their minds that they forget to edit. Or some of us don't have a good grasp of their grammar.
Either way, as long as they get their point across and everyone understood their message, who cares?

Whether Pattison writes the way he does to annoy you or not, it is his choice to write that way and under the TOS he is protected against being trashed in public forums, end of story.
....I'm not wrapped around his finger:he just happens to be my favorite friend. That hardly matters: what matters is, I'd step up to defend anyone on here I thought was being repeatedly attacked for being different. I don't care if that difference is involuntary or an affectation, it matters not.

What your stance on a member on here insinuating that another member is a terrorist? Or on a member being insulted by another member because of his religion?

    Yeah, I thought so.

Maybe I should clarify my question. I'm talking about the overall coherence of a post. A post can be coherent without being checked for spelling or grammar. I'm not interested in what causes ineptitude in these areas or how to remedie the situation; the culprits are clearly outlined in every state budget across the country. What does interest me, is what causes the non-sensical blather that happens *sometimes* because I've never in my life heard ANYONE speak the way some of these posts read.

Thanks, MikePhilPerez, for giving me an response that correlates to my question. I suspected some people do it purposefully. I also thought maybe the responses could be cooked up by some program, similar to the one that runs laundering scams on craigslist.

I don't think this problem is endemic to realjock-- so forgive me if i've persecuted or mischaracterized its members. Youtube is another big jackpot for this stuff.

Oh, and Theaterngym- I agree with you completely. Everyone who participates in these forums do so with the express purpose of being misunderstood, and releasing all that pent up testosterone.

I've been critical of poor grammar on here before. I have since learned not to do that, since it just pisses people off, which is not my intent. However, since you yourself are being critical of others, I can't resist:

MikePhilPerez saidPattison has rapped a few guys on here around his little finger.

The word you want is "wrapped", not "rapped".

    MikePhilPerez saidGG being one.

    This is not a sentence.

MikePhilPerez saidPattison is very well capable of speaking as well as anyone on here.

The phrase "very well capable" is not good grammar. Just say "very capable".

MikePhilPerez saidIn Fact it has been said

The 'F' in "Fact" should be lower case, and you should put a comma after that word.

MikePhilPerez saidAnyway Robadob, When I read your post I just assumed you were talking about Pattison as he is just about the only one on RJ that does what you say.

The 'W' in "When" should be lower case.

I'm sure there is more I have missed...

Thanks for your words of support. But this post was not made for me, not this one anyway. As I had never made that statement.

It was the next poster seeking my attension again, because I ignore him. icon_rolleyes.gif

But lets not forget. I don't talk American, nor spell American either. Nor am I going to, as it's something so many Americans expect, instead of them bordering their own herizons. I myself have no troble understanding American English. But I speak Aussie.icon_biggrin.gif

I've read posts here in which the point the person was trying to get across was not clear because the writing was so bad. In some of those cases, I know that I wasn't the only person who was puzzled.

Generally, I don't care much. It's not my problem if someone either can't write clearly or doesn't want to take the time to do so.

I do sometimes wonder, though, how some of those people get along in the world. If you can't make yourself understood, you have a problem. It's not my problem, but I do wonder how those people get by. If you try to help someone (which involves pointing out that his post is hard to understand), you're likely to get a hostile response so it usually doesn't seem worth the bother to say anything.

Well, I have said it before on RJ. I can not spell to save my life. I probable couldn't post to forums without a spell checker. Now I need a grammar checker. But go ahead, have your fun. In fact (how was that :winkicon_smile.gif I like when people correct me. I learn form it. So thanks for the lesson icon_razz.gif

jprichva saidI think in two years here I've pointed out someone's spelling or grammar mistake perhaps twice, and only then because the person I called out was making fun of someone else's grammar mistakes.

The point is, why correct anyone? In the end, what does it get you?

This made me almost shoot beer out of my nose.
Haven't seen any posts on RJ quite like that though.

For clarity, we probably should avoid meaningless phrases for the sake of coherence when restricted by the limitations of a written communications media. WORD TO YA MUTHA!
