It's a MMOG, Massive Multiplayer Online Game, based on the stand-alone computer game Warcraft.

I don't play it as often as I play City of Heroes, but I do play on Blackwing Lair and Aggramar once in a while.

I used to play, but I finally canceled my account months ago. Just didn't have time for it and realized that it had lost a lot of what made it fun to begin with. My lock was 66 at the time, and I just couldn't bring myself to level him or my priest anymore.

actually, I read a study about how doctors who played video games (for x amount of hours per week) were consistantly better at laparoscopic surgery than those who didn't.

    BioMatty,

You don't really believe that, do you?

    What is laparoscopic?

    Does it involve a console?

Poor video games, they get such a bad rap when there's really very little evidence that they do any harm at all. And as you mentioned, BioMatty, there are a number of studies that have shown increased cognitive skills as a result of playing certain types of video games.

Well my original post was just joking around with you guys. So please don't take me too seriously.

But saying that, I do think video games are bad for your brain, in children at least. There are a few cases where children have done strange things, and it is believed that there behavior was imitating what was in a video game.

Is this game "World of Warecraft" violent? And if so how bad are we talking?

Not trying to condemn anyone here, just some researchicon_smile.gif

MikePhil - that has more to do with lazy parents ignoring their children... Little Bobby shouldn't be able to lay hands on Grand Theft Auto, just like he shouldn't be allowed to watch Scarface.

Warcraft is probably one of the 'less' violent gameplays - the concepts themselves are pretty gruesome (what with the whole 'undead' aspect, or the blood elves sucking the magic out of creatures) but the actual game itself is pretty devoid of blood or graphic violence, unlike the GTA series, doom, etc.

laparoscopic surgary is done with a thin, lighted tube that's inserted into the area that is being operated on, and transmits the image to a screen in front of the doctor. Lol, it's actually 'kind of' like a video game.

A friend of mine just gave up WoW. He'd totalled his hours and found that he'd spent 1 whole month worth of hours over the last three years playing!

He tried to sell his characters on Ebay but got the big cock-block on that. Evidently YOUR characters are WoW's property or some shit. I don't get that part.

I recently made a friend who is heavily into War Craft. Infact, I spent the night at his house and woke up at 4am to find he was still at the computer.

I have to refuse to get into the game because I know I can easily fall into it just the same. I have had my game obsessions and dont have the time recently to take on new ones. I'll stick to being online at all hours of the night. There's more porn here anyways!

    lol....

Isengard, UD mage from Bleeding Hollow -> transferred to Cho'gall where I was a member of Death Wish. May or may not be familiar with them, but a lot of serverwide "firsts" are attributed to them.... I quit before the expansion. Never made it past 60 and never had any gear above Tier 3. But, was certainly fun.

You may have heard of me if you know anything about the "Orly, Yarly" crave which was started after a discussion/argument I was having with an alliance warrior while dueling. lol

    How I miss that game.

I also played FFXI. But that was over 3 years ago.

Ha, yeah the orly/yarly thing is still around.

As for video games being a source of youth violence, I highly doubt you could pinpoint the causal direction. Otherwise, every kid playing violent video games would turn out violent. It's more likely that kids who are already violent to begin with are more drawn to violent video games.

And as for the cognitive benefits of video games, Bavelier & Green from the University of Rochester have shown that visuospatial abilities increase after exposure to 3D action video games... although I'm skeptical of the size and duration of this effect. Most likely the benefits are as temporary as the overly hyped Mozart effect.
