Master Cleanse/Lemonade Diet

    Hey All,

So, I've decided to take on the challenge of trying the Master Cleanse (aka The Lemonade Diet) for its full 10-day span.

Here's how it works: for ten days, you eat no solid food, and drink roughly two liters daily of a special lemonade which is made of maple syrup, lemon juice, water, and cayenne pepper. It's actually pretty tasty. Evey night, you drink an herbal laxative tea, and in the morning you do a salt-water flush, which is the act of chugging one quart of warm water with two teaspoons of salt dissolved in it. That part is hell.

    So, today is day one.
The salt water flush sucked. Real hard. The lemonade is really tasty though, and I like the spicy kick that the cayenne gives it. I haven't been hungry all day, and that's hopefully a sign of good things to come. I'm going into caffeine withdrawals, and that's unfortunate, but part of the reason I'm doing this.

I'm going to update this post every day for the next ten days, because I delude myself into thinking that people care about my bowel movements.

    Prepare to care.

***UPDATE: I just actually remembered that I posted this. I quit this, like, 8 hours after I started. I advise no one ever try this. ever.***

Are you having some problem that you are treating with this? Unless there is some problem, the colon takes care of itself. And flushing out the natural bacteria that inhabit the colon is not a good thing. They serve useful purposes from freeing up nutrients and manufacturing nutrients to be absorbed.

"The average human body, consisting of about 1013 (10,000,000,000,000 or about ten trillion) cells, has about ten times that number of microorganisms in the gut.[1][2][3][4] The metabolic activity performed by these bacteria is equal to that of a virtual organ making the gut bacteria termed as a "forgotten" organ.[5] ..."

"Research suggests that the relationship between gut flora and humans is not merely commensal (a non-harmful coexistence), but rather is a mutualistic, symbiotic relationship.[3] Though people can survive with no gut flora,[4] the microorganisms perform a host of useful functions, such as fermenting unused energy substrates, training the immune system, preventing growth of harmful species,[2] regulating the development of the gut, producing vitamins for the host (such as biotin and vitamin K), and producing hormones to direct the host to store fats."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gut_flora

"The bacteria break down some of the fiber for their own nourishment and create acetate, propionate, and butyrate as waste products, which in turn are used by the cell lining of the colon for nourishment."

A 17 year old girl i was in High-school Home Ec class did that for an entire month

She collapsed in class one day at school and had to go through counseling...She also cost her parents over $3000 because she eroded away all her teeth and had to have 2 replaced.

I'm not blaming everything that happened to her on her crazy lemon diet but I'm pretty sure it contributed and is not a healthy way to loose weight

Good luck dude. A girl I used to work with did this and was on her death bed for 4 days .. calling in sick everyday. Very selfish!!! icon_lol.gif

Plus, I really don't think it did shit for her ... she was trying to break her caffeine addiction and lose some weight. Both failed...

That "cleanse" sounds like a load of crap. You get no nutrients and shit your brains out for 2 weeks. What's the point? Eat more leafy green veggies, eat All-Bran, and drinks LOTS of water for 2 weeks. I bet it'll do you just as much good.

    Give me an I.
    Give me a D.
    Give me an I.
    Give me an O.
    Give me a T.

    What's that spell?

In reality, there's not a sound basis for a silly "master cleanse." This topic has been covered a lot.

I think, but, then, that's just my view, it's really silly to throw your body into famine mode, and live on sugar water with pepper. I think it's dumb. Nothing could be further from sound nutrition.

You want a cleanse? Take some fiber, or do an enema. You'll be feeling fresh in no time.

You have an appendix for a reason: to store that bacteria for when your digestive system needs a re-start. DOH!

You need stuff up in there to make things work. Bacteria can be our friend.

Why mess yourself up with such a convoluted notion?

Ever watch Showtime's popular series Penn and Tellar's Bullshit! ? A whole episode was dedicated to the lunacy of this.

Why don't people do research first on the internet before they try some 'fad'?

Review its effectiveness, is there actual science into it and who care's about testimonials for graphs and percentages are better (if those are even real). Listen, diet's DON'T work. Change of Habit does, so get rid of the bad stuff your eating including your lemonade-concoction and do yourself a favor and research what to eat that's good for you, how often and what percentage of.

Better yet, you’re on RealJock! There's nutrition plans here for you to use! The people who care are those letting you know that doesn't work.

Here's a great way to approach diets... if it would kill someone with type 1 diabetes, there's little guarantee it's good for you.

I notices those against it are not posting anything from google icon_confused.gif
I'm not backing it, but is there research to show it is bad? Is there research to show it is good? Those girls mentioned, are there reports to say it was the diet that caused their illness. Is it possible that something else caused the complications?

    So.... According to you

Tylenol (paracetamol) the worlds most widely used analgesic is deadly and illegal in ireland.

Yet you require proof that a diet of lemons and maple syrup is bad for you...How about the simple fact that that diet has no protein, complex carbs, essential fats, A, B, D, E Vits, iron, calcium

I'm sure no teeth Sofie's bulimia contributed to her teeth lose, but all i know is that she lost two of them during her lemon diet fortnight and herself blames it on eating nothing but lemons as did the dentist who did had to replace them

Google has lots of stuff backing it. If it were trashing it you would be posting it here. I agree it don't seem to make sense, but I'm not a doctor and I haven't researched it.

Cleanses are complete and utter bunk. You are probably doing more damage to your system by cleansing it. Make sure more whole grains are in your diet, fiber, fruits and vegetables.

Yeah but Google also has lots of stuff backing the existence of UFO's. You don't have to be disagreeable just for the sake of being disagreeable lol.

Hi Mike...links concerning the dangers of the cleansing diets were included in the two previous posts, which I will allude to here. If you like, I can repost those as well. Sorry for all the dismissals.

She most-likely collapsed because she didn't use enough maple syrup. When I tried this cleanse I lasted 5 days and lost about 12lbs fast. My friends said I looked emaciated and I too was not using enough syrup. Depending on your level of physical activity, the lemonade recipe must be adjusted properly.

As far as the supposed teeth issue...perhaps she was taking meth too. [!?]

The Master Cleanse can be safe and effective if done properly. But, every body is different.

    My thoughts on the subject.
