Obama's a smoothie - but is the 'special relationship' really that special?

Obama said at his meeting with Brown...

"The special relationship between the US and Great Britain is one that is not just important to me. It's important to the American people.

"It is sustained by a common language, a common culture, our legal system which is directly inherited from the English system and our system of government, reflected in many of these same values. And, by the way, that's also where my mother's side of the family comes from."

He's tickling the Brit's belly. He's quite popular in polls there, so why would he tread on that.

Also, much of this stuff is code. "I will overlook things you do just as you overlook things we do. After all, we're blood brothers."

Gosh and here I was thinking the yankee's did as much as they could to separate themselves from Mother England and be as diffrent as possible.

You bastardised the Queens English, changed it's spelling too.
You drive on the wrong side of the road.
Your political and legal systems are diffrent too; albeit the root of them is British.

You claim all men are born equal, so long as you are white, and a hetrosexual. This is too dismiss that people born with status are no better than a peasant. What a great peace of propaganda. Considering America longs for a Royal family of it's own. It started with Camelot, and those Kennedys. So the truth of the matter is. Not all men are born Equal in the USA, or anywhere else.

Little Weed With No Hair. I'm happy to of put a smile on your face. But this topic was about the US A's and Mother England's relationship, and not that of Oz and Mother England's. At least we did not try to re write English by changing it's spelling, as the Americans have. True bastardisation. Notice I used an s and not a z, as it should be....icon_biggrin.gif

It was funny because more often than not you misspell words then you talk about bastardizing language. By the way there is no space between the S and the A or the e and the w.

But their is a difference to misspelling a word, and deliberately bastardising a language. Americans act as if there is only one form of English, and thats American. The Pommies, the Yankees, and the Aussies all speak a diffrent language. Yet I have no troble understanding the 3 of em. Most Americans only understand American English. So I find it funny Mr President thinks America and the pommies speak the same language, when they don't.

The first thing an Aussie or Australian actor has to loss if he wants to work in Hollywood is their accent, because Americans don't have the ability to understand it.

Someone is a bit bitter about Michael Phelps proving Ian Thorpe just wasn't all that big of deal. Don't worry Patti-cake, the aussies will some day be able to hold their heads high in the pool again. That Yankee can't live forever. Heck he is even trying to help you buy smoking.

Mr president. Once the sun never set o the British Empire. After the negative impact Americanisation has had on the world, maybe it's time the sun now set on the American Empire too, and you gave the world back it's sovereignty. This will give you, one more thing in common with Mother England.

One never cared about Ian Thorpe. Although he was one of the worlds best gay swimmers. But if you look at Americas population to Down Under. We did very well in the medals.icon_biggrin.gif

But this has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Off topic has never seemed to stop you before so I figured it was fair game for all of us as well. Funny you are the only Aussie I have ever met who make the claim about not caring about Thorpe. But then making up crazy claims has never really stopped you in the past either. And you are correct but about medals, but to use your analogy, time for the sun to set on that one.icon_razz.gif

Well no that's english. I didn't take american language in school I took english. Sure us American caucasian, hispanic, black, asian, ect. speak different but it is more cultural in my opinion than anything else. If you want to talk about bastardizing language I don't hear many people say thee's and thou's these days, but um... maybe I'm wrong.

RE: Ian Thorpe. Maybe you have only talked to Australian, and not Aussies, or Australians imposing to be an Aussie; not sure?

But no-one really cares about Ian down here anymore. Well except the speculation about his sexuality. And he doesn't want the truth to come out, for fear, people will care even less.

Re: crazy claims; icon_lol.gif Well on anther thread it was stated America is all about freedom of speech, so no issue then. Even though it's the birth place of political correctness, and thats all about controlling freedom of speech, it's about censorship, and used as a tool too attack, and abuse those who really do pratic freedom of speech.

Ahhh, no you qualify the statement. Of course no one cares any more. He has been rendered a eunuch by Phelps. Why would you people be excited about your great swimmer turned eunuch. That would silly.

But he had retired before Mr ADHD Philips come to the Olympics, with all his bent up energy.

Ian just doesn't want to be remembered as the great Aussie gay swimmer, coz if he come out, all people would remember him for is his sexuality. But then now days, if he hits the media, it's because hes been seen coming out of the water with another male swimmer.

But this has nothing to do with the fact that Mr president was wrong. Mother England and Ms USA, have very little in common.

I think it's funny that the ones talking about "bastardizing the Queen's English" have horrible grammar themselves.

As for Australian actors' accents, it's not necessarily that the American people can't understand an Australian accent. I admit sometimes I find it hard to understand an Australian because of it, but I think the main reason for the whole "Australian actors having to lose their accents" thing is more because American filmmakers don't want viewers to be distracted by the accent. Still, there are many movies in which the actors have accents...

He was retired when he raced against Phelps at the Olympic games in Athens? Wow. I didn't know you could race in the Olympics and be retired at the same time.

*Note: Phelps didn't beat Thorpe in Athens. It took til Bejing to beat Thorpe's records and do what Thorpe said was impossible which was win 8 Golds.
