Most gay men are an unhappy lot whose only pleasure is running down other people, usually with name calling or personal insults.

Name calling and personal insults are things to which small-minded people resort. I post on and read several web sites on several subjects. My perception is that name calling and personal insults are not more prevalent here than on sites than on sites with a significantly smaller percentage of gay posters.

If you're smart, there's rarely if ever a need to resort to such tactics. If you really want to get someone, simply point out the flaws in his arguments. Sometimes all you need to do is ask a few questions, simple questions. When someone can't answer those simple questions, you know you've won. If that person simply ignores your simple questions because he can't answer them, you've proved all you needed to prove.

There are plenty of people here who rarely if ever insult other posters or call them names. You may not notice them as much. I think they're actually the majority here, but many of them are not among the most frequent posters and perhaps they're generally less noticeable.

Just a few more thoughts on the general subject of name calling and insults.

Sometimes people resort to name calling because they know they're wrong. It's much smarter to admit it when someone shows that you're wrong and to actually thank the other person for teaching you something you didn't know. Some people can't do that. Even some smart people can't do that.

If someone insults you, not responding with insults is more frustrating to that person. There are more ways than one to skin a cat. (Yecch! Horrible thought, skinning a cat. But you know what I mean.)

But I really don't think any of this is especially more prevalent among gay men. On the internet, people get nasty in ways they wouldn't in person.
