Hey everyone! I'm heading down to SXSW in Austin in a couple weeks. What should I do while I'm there? I need a good coffee shop to grade some papers one day, too.

It's tough to get into a lot of the events, so does anyone have any secrets or extra tickets to anything (especially the decemberists' show). K thanks.

Do you have a badge or wristband waiting for you? If you don't you are basically screwed. The official SXSW showcases let in badges first, then wristbands and then if there is room left you can pay 20 dollars or so to get in. Since most known bands are playing smaller venues than normal you are pretty much out of luck when it comes to getting in for 20 dollars. I was turned away with a wristband for a lot of things last year.

The shows that have tickets are the private parties out on by labels and the like but those aren't really advertised and the tickets are not for sale.

There are a lot of un-official SXSW showcases that tend to be either free or really cheap and best of all they often have free beer. You can find a list of those on the Austin Shows List.

As far as a good coffee shops go Little City on congress is in the thick of what is going on. Halcyon is also a good one downtown. Though I am not such a big fan since they have remodeled.

    I miss Austin.

Keep a look out for free shows. In 2002 I saw Iron and Wine play in an Urban Outfitters for an hour.

    I wish I could go.

I don't know what type of music you like but you might enjoy Passion Pit, and also Temper Trap. I really enjoy them.

This was really, really, really helpful for me. It may help you for non-SXSW related activities. For coffee shops, I liked Halcyon and Little City.

    Have a blast! I'm so jealous. icon_smile.gif

Hey thanks! Yeah, I'm super excited. I haven't left this town in forever, so it will be great as soon as I finish some grading. I have a friend who works for a Nashville artist agency, so I'm trying to use her for tickets. It's great.

Thanks again for the help. Maybe I'll see some folks there!

Halcyon on 4th street is good for smores and cranberry muffins (MMmmmm)...I wasn't a fan of their hot chocolate. (haven't tried the coffee)

lil city is a bit too pricey for my tastes but it's a good hang out.

I don't know how far you want to go outside the downtown area but over near the pflugerville area (north...very north...like 20 mins) there are several cool hang outs and shops.

-Formosa Tea House is a great place for a relaxing cup/pot of imported herbal teas. Cutest place ever! With bright colors and a homie feel. If you need to do paper work and you want a calm but engaging place, I would check that out.

-Then there is Mangu Cafe. Not really a place to get coffee either but I would choose to eat at this authentic Dominica restaurant than at any of the sup'd up pricey places downtown that pray on the tourist from SXSW. I cannot get enough of their Pineapple rum shrimp or their Tres Leche Cake...OH-MAI-GAWD either by itself is worth the trip up here. Not to mention the best seafood and hispanic steak I've had since my last trip to Panama.

But, while downtown, why not try taking a run through zilker park, or canoeing on town lake/lady bird lake. Check out the statue of that one guy on Auditorium Shores with the free shows goin' on. Check out the bob bullock museum and while your at it, go watch an Imax movie.

Haha...that "one guy". You really must be from Pflugerville.icon_wink.gif

Already time for SXSW? That means it's ALMOST time for hot weather. Which can only mean one thing: Hot Austin men in hardly any clothes.

Well, I had it on here that I was in P-ville but I felt alone (which I am...) so i set it to Austin. They are close enough. And I totally knew it was Stevie Ray but I didn't want to take a chance I happened to be wrong since it's been a few months since I saw it last.

SXSW weekend is one of the busiest in austin. not only is the musicfest going on but its also spring break and the Star of texas rodeo is at the same time. so if you are looking to take a break from SXSW, you can find plenty to do.

    star of texas rodeo
this is texas after all. LOL

    ranch 616
great restaurant, steaks, seafood with a...ummm texas twist....might be tough to get a seat. small place and it has a tiny stage...a band will sure to be playing...SXSW..duh

    rio rita
coffee house by day, lounge by night. surely to have bands playing. eclectic. great for people watching. bartender looks like neil young...he is a total ass and a drink nazi. have your id ready! you will see what im talking about. ha.

    juan in a million
this place is awesome for breakfast...if you like mexican food.

    barton creek greenbelt
beautiful scenery...great place to hike..weather should be great for it

    town lake
the running trails of town lake wind thru a good part of downtown...passing along both auditorium shores and zilker park where there will be free shows. the weather should be great and theres sure to be plenty of eyecandy running the trails icon_smile.gif

    Jo's coffee
the one on 2nd is ok. the best is one is on congress. great place to grab coffee and sit outside and people watch. san jose hotel is next door...their pool area is great for drinks at night...check it out.

    /www.hippiehollow.com">hippie hollow
ive never been, but this seems to be an attraction. the only clothing optional park in texas. on the shores of lake travis. from what ive heard, the people that are nude...ummm ...should be..ha

    hope it helps!

Craigslist will be saturated with ACL tickets for cheap the closer you get to the date. ACL is another AMAZING event, you must come for it.
