When I was in Hawaii over new years I couldn't help but notice that for the most part the younger guys were wearing board shorts,
the 30 and 40 year olds were wearing square cuts,
and the older dudes were wearing speedos.....

I don't mean to generalize but does anyone else notice this?
    What gives?

They got stuck in shortshorts mode when it was still acceptable.

That or they want skin cancer so badly they're increasing the surface area of their skin to encourage it.

Older men were young back when it wasn't considered vulgar to wear a smaller swimsuit, just like older men were young back when guys actually showered naked together.

Ummmm, the guy in the picture is hot. He looks like a real life Master Roshi.
Older people are more practical: they go to the beach to sun and get wet
so naturally they wear as little as possible, make sense?

OMG! He should be inside healing his baked skin - that's disgusting. BUT, to each his own...

I have noticed this, especially since I live in a city of Gay retired men all over the place. Bunjamon has explained it well though. Some people like the least about of clothing coverage, others want more. It's just a personal choice and if you want to go to the beach or lay by a pool with only pretty people, you better get your own pool or private beach cuz that's just life!

    Bunjamon> Older men were young

Really? OMG, I learn something new every day.....

But yeah, I think you nailed it. Some people stick with the styles from their past. Looking in my crystal ball:

When I was younger I wore the standard size suit, not to long but not to short,
but the long board short was not in style unless you were surfing. As I got older my shorts got a bit smaller, not bikini, but shorter, why BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY SOLD IN THE STORES. However, when you go to europe, beaches of France, Spain and Italy, you do not see long shorts on anyone(except over the last few years some of the younger are in board shorts because AF shows this style andthey are in the stores where the young shop). The older your get and the shorter your short is probably due to an older guy in now more comfortable with his body no matter the size, a young american guy is too insecure-generally not always; the short short is actually more comfortable in general beach and or water sports, except surfing, jet skiing and waterskiing, where a bit longer is more comfortable at least for me it is; and finally, long shorts are not marketed in general to the older guy, when I say older i am saying 65+. I prefer a mid short, not always available every year due to fashion designs, so one year it is an inch short and one year 2 inches longer etc. so I have all sizes for all need(no thongs, backless or speedos for the beach) I do have a speedo for the lap pool during training, but I only wore them once, not because I care what people think, I just feel naked in them and a bit sexy as well and i would not know what to do if I got excited in the least with a speedo on so I do not wear it. I notice everybody's suit, but I could care a less what or why they wear what they wear, too many more important or friv. fun. ideas to occupy my mind.

PS, the guy in your pic, actually looks ok in his bikini, you should have used a more dramatic example to illustrate your point, you know they are out there now.

Maybe it has less to do with how they look than how they feel wearing them? They are self-indulgent.

I'm not a big fan of board shorts, unless you're actually going to be out in the water surfing or boogie boarding. I see a lot of the younger guys sporting these really long board shorts that come down to the middle of their calves. It just looks ridiculous. It's a cross between knickerbockers and high water pants. icon_lol.gif

Last summer I tried to find some normal shorts for the beach that go about mid-thigh. Practically impossible. Basically, the only selections at most stores are Speedo bikini style, tight square cuts, or long/baggy board shorts. I had to order some normal shorts online.

    LOL.... this is very funny.
For the record I was not trying to pass judgment in any way shape or form....or say that older men were WRONG for wearing less. The picture I posted was one that some say the guy is hot, some say not. Which is exactly what I wanted the reaction to be. I was just asking the question.

Again....really wasn't suggesting older men in speedos good or bad....I just was asking the question and yes now it makes sense. Speedos were "in" back in the day, and this might be what older men are more comfortable with.

Because this is a forum and i guess the idea is to exchange comments back and forth or ask questions and such.

Because older people don't care what young stupid people think about them.

Because at the end of the day we'll all be a long time dead.

And because life is just too short to worry about saggy, unflattering board shorts that are impractical for swimming.

i suppose people just wear what they're comfortable in.

There's a gay campground about an hour out of time around here, and YES. The older the man, the more shameless they are. I don't know if it's them simply being dense, ore them acting out on the feelings they had to repress in their youth. All I'm saying is that if you have dick-doo disease (as in "mah gut sticks out further than mah dick do!), pack it in. Please.

Personally I think it means older guys have a lot of self esteem and/or don't give a shit what anyone thinks about them. I think all the hot younger guys out there should follow their example.

    agree....you bought what was sold
now younger guys buy things to hide their wares
like you 'don't have a big dick'
older men have big dicks...not like you guys
and we bought what was sold
    i have both

Gees I think I'm the opposite. In my youth I would wear speedos, and board shorts. I still look good in speedos. But I only wear board shorts to the beach now days. Thats all I was wearing while I was in Hawaii too.icon_biggrin.gif
