I'm headed to Washington DC this coming week (Wednesday-Sunday night) and, having never gotten a chance to really explore the city, was wondering what people recommended both in terms of attractions during the day and the nightlife? I know there's a huge assortment of museums and such in the area, but was curious what folks thought was really worth checking out.

The central tourist area is The Mall....the large grassy area that is ringed by museums, monuments, White House, and the Capitol Building.....if you watched Obama's inauguration, that's where all those people were standing. In this area are:

The Smithsonian Museums which has something for everybody...

    http://dc.about.com/cs/museums/a/Smithsonian.htm

The National Gallery of Art is not part of the Smithsonian but is in the same location in DC. ... http://www.nga.gov/

Of course, the monuments, White House, Capitol Building, Library of Congress, Supreme Court Building are all in the same area too.

Also there is the US National Archives if you want to see the The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence

Dupont Circle is the main gay area for bars etc ... http://dc.about.com/od/neigborhoodprofiles/p/DupontCircle.htm

The Phillips Collection is a small modern art museum just 3 blocks from Dupont Circle... well worth visiting ... http://www.phillipscollection.org/

My favorite bar in DC, however, is just 6 blocks east of the Capitol Building. It's called Remington's...a country western bar ... http://www.remingtonswdc.com/

Of course, there are the historical sites everywhere in DC and over in VA.

Probably most prominent in VA is Mount Vernon, George Washington's estate... http://www.mountvernon.org/

Hope that helps.....anything else you want to know?

Here is info on the DC metro....the best way to get around DC

Big Daddy C9k handled touristy stuff extremely well so I'll just post this link to an old thread on DC nightlife http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/318273/

My only change to that thread would be to not recommend Halo. Too much drama there lately.

Next Saturday is a monthly dance party at the 9:30 club. Its called Blowoff. Its been getting some good word of mouth and they have started taking the act on the road. Its put on by Bob Mould, who was big in the American alternative rock scene in the 1980's. Its supposed to be eclectic and fun. The pictures I've seen make it look like its popular with bears.

last time I was in DC I taught a bunch of kids how top play Spoons. It's a game we played in Detroit. You get a handfull of spoons (we got ours from the high school cafeteria) and you drive around looking for homeless people, prostitutes, or other CHUD. You lean out the car window and throw a spoon at them. If you hit the target, you're ok. If you miss you have to get out of the car and get the spoon back.

Went out to the bars last night. And asked around to see what the hot spots are. Lots of people are talking about Ziegfelds/Secret, a new strip club/ dance club that opened a few weeks ago. People were telling me that Town is dead since Ziegfelds opened. Well, I went to Town last night and it was far from dead. The drag show was packed.

Despite many people telling me Ziegfelds is the place to go, none of them had been there.
