Hey guys, I'm about to go to Costa Rica for a week and was wondering if people out there had advice. Mostly, I just want to find a nice beach, relax, go surfing, and do some hiking.

I've heard it's a gay friendly place so I was wondering if you guys had suggestions of beaches, bed/breakfasts, etc. I'm not looking for some kind of wild vacation gay nightclub scene, just some friendly faces in peaceful surroundings.

    Thanks!

It's great there. Mal Pais is a great spot. I also liked Dominical. Don't spend too much time in Tamarindo if you can avoid it, pretty touristy.

I'm in Costa Rica now. It's really beautiful and there is a lot to see. Peaceful surroundings abound. Outside of La Fortuna is Nuevo Arenal in the rain forest. The people are amazingly friendly. I've never been any place where I was so warmly greeted as I have been at the local bar called Tipico. The Ticos (locals) here are so kind and generous. And gay friendly to be sure. Many of the men here swing both ways. I have felt comfortable everywhere.

For a really cool, laid back beach: Playa Montezuma. Depending upon where you are you can drive down to Puntarenas and take the ferry, your car and all, over to the peninsula and drive in to Montezuma. If you feel adventuresome, and have a sturdy 4WD vehicle, you can take back roads up the peninsula to many other hidden beaches. The roads are really bumpy and you have to cross a few rivers without bridges. It is incredibly scenic.

Wrapping up three weeks here, if any of this sounds of interest to you, I'm happy to share more experiences. Drop me an email. You're likely to have a really wonderful time!

I lived in Costa Rica for a summer and went to the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area. It is touristy, but its beautiful. (and can be as low key as you want to make it). The Arenal area is wonderful as well.

I live in Playa Grande which is really good surf and close to other great surf spots (Tamarindo, Langosta, Avellanas, Negra). Tamarindo is the largest town and many people either love it or hate it. It's been quite windy the last couple of weeks, so surf not as great as normal. However, a big swell is to arrive tomorrow and all my surfing buddies are quite happy. Websites for CR surf conditions include www.crsurf.com and www.magicseaweed.com. For hiking, check out the Arenal volcano area. Email me for other CR advice if you wish.

Hey man, Costa Rica is magical. Ive been three times and plan on going again...i actually fell in love with my best friend there...but thats another LONG forum....

The best time to go is right now and July ,in my opinion.
I always find myself traveling towards the carribean side.
Puerto Viejo, one of my favorite places to stay. very mellow; a little carribean surf town, all the local surfers are HOT!!! and the people are so nice.
you wanna go to the following:

    Bread and chocolate for breakfast
    Cheboli Beach for dinner
The absolute best ever!!! but there's more....

and yes, goto BOCOS in Panama! you'll love it there too.

im going to BELIZE in June...has anyone been?
