I received the following email today. Apparently Fred Phelps is coming to my school because he doesn't want us to have our Pride Week in April, and we are trying to use it as an opportunity to raise funds for our Pride Alliance. I figured I'd pass the word along to you guys just in case anyone wants to help. Here is the link and text...

    http://www.phelps-a-thon.com/George_Mason.html

    George Mason University Phelps-A-Thon

Fred Phelps’ clan is coming to George Mason University! The “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church is planning to picket George Mason University during Pride Week. Fred Phelps and his group travel all across the United States spreading their message of hate and lies about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

However, when the Phelps group comes to George Mason University to protest Pride Week, they will actually be raising money for the University’s gay/straight alliance (Pride Alliance).

Driving Equality is hosting a Phelps-A-Thon to counter Fred Phelps’ hateful message. For every minute the “God Hates Fags” clan is protesting, we will be collecting donations for Pride Alliance. (Pledge Online)

The Phelps clan will be protesting at the university from 7:45 AM to 8:30 AM on March 30th. You can pledge any amount you chose, whether it be $0.25, $0.50, $1, or even $2 for every minute they protest. You can even pledge a flat rate for the entire time the group will be demonstrating. (Pledge Online)

The point of this Phelps-A-Thon is two fold. First, we are using Phelps’ own hateful message to raise funds for a good cause, one that will help counter the lies that are being spread about LGBT people. Second, After the event, we will send Phelps a thank you card, telling him how much money he raised for LGBT equality.

This will certainly upset the group and it is possible that they will stop protesting in order to stop our fundraising.

On the “God Hates Fags” website, Phelps has this to say about the upcoming protest at George Mason University:

“George Mason University - Fag Pride? There is NO REPENTANCE 4400 University Drive These nasty little DOOMED american brats are having them a festival of pure evil. They want us all to bow down and kiss fag arse, and there is a little group of humans still alive in this nation/world who will still do their duty to their neighbour (Leviticus 19:17-1icon_cool.gif and tell them that if they do not wholly put away that filthy manner of life and their false gods - God will destroy them both body and soul in hell forever. Here is what we will tell them, in short, God Hates Fags, Fags Are Worthy of Death, 2 Gay Rights: AIDs and Hell, God Hates Fag Enablers, Hell Is Real - Ask Matt (Sheperd), etc. The same God who destroyed Sodom will destroy this nation, shortly now. Jude 1:5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8 ¶ Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. AMEN!”

I don't allow people like this to twist my mind into hating myself like when I was 14-20.

Now, just like everyone else at my GLBT pride group on campus, we plan on using them to make $.

    HA!

And you'd think he'd be on our side, given all those Olympic medals he just won. Like it's our fault he got caught with a bong.

You do nothing. These people need no help looking like the buffoons they are. You only lower yourself to their level when you engage them, and help them get more free publicity. Don't play into their hand.

Go ahead and enjoy your Pride week in spite of them.

Phelps is a nut case. A classic example of the nuts in false belief systems, and their followers.

    EVERY MINUTE COUNTS

    http://www.autbar.com/fred_phelps_press_release.htm

ANN ARBOR, MI - When the Reverend Fred Phelps came to town, the gay community here decided not to get mad. They decided to get rich.

Among the Ann Arbor locales the Kansas-based Phelps and his band elected to picket was the /aut/ BAR, a gay-owned restaurant, bar and community gathering place. When co-owner Keith Orr heard that his establishment was being targeted, he wanted to respond constructively. He and his partner, Martin Contreras, did not want to promote a counter-demonstration, feeling that Phelps gains the most attention – and hence is most effective – when he provokes anger and outrage from his opponents. Rather, Orr decided to use his Phelps visit to the community’s advantage.

Phelps’s plans to picket the bar came to light only two days prior to his scheduled February 17, 2001 demonstration. With little time, Orr used the Internet to organize a unique fundraising scheme. In an email message to customers, supporters, and friends, he proposed that people pledge money to the Washtenaw Rainbow Action Project (WRAP), a local gay advocacy group and community center, for every minute that Phelps picketed the bar. In this way, Orr explained, the longer Phelps stayed to spew hate, the more money he would raise for WRAP. He and Contreras kicked off the drive by pledging $1 per minute.

Contreras explained why he felt it was important to organize a response to Phelps. “When I was first coming out fifteen years ago people told me, ‘You’ve got to watch out for this so-called reverend from Kansas named Phelps. He’s out to wage war against the gay community.’ He had been showing up at funerals of people who had died of AIDS with signs claiming that gay people would burn in hell. At the time he was just a blip on the radar screen. But when he protested at Matthew Shepherd’s funeral he became a national menace.”

At the same time, Orr continued, “I didn’t want to give Phelps what he wanted,” meaning a counter-demonstration. “But just ignoring him seemed wrong.”

Only two minutes after Orr sent out his email message pledges began to pour in, not only from Ann Arbor, but from as far away as New Hampshire, Texas and California. The pledge drive gained such momentum that by the day of Phelps’s demonstration – only 48 hours after Orr and Contreras kicked off the drive – friends and supporters of Ann Arbor’s gay community had promised to contribute a total of $107 for every minute Phelps picketed the /aut/ BAR.

“When I began the pledge drive I wasn’t necessarily expecting anything big,” Orr said. “I just wanted to give people an opportunity to turn Phelps’s message of hate into something positive for our community.” Even so, the size and speed of the response surprised him. “Normally a fundraising event of this magnitude takes months of planning and a lot of up-front costs. In 48 hours we raised over $6000 without spending a dime. I was astonished.”

Pledges arrived in diverse amounts and from a wide range of sources. They varied in amount from as little as 10 cents per minute to as much as 5 dollars per minute. “The great thing about this kind of fundraiser is that no one is excluded. People can participate at any economic level,” said Orr. The range of contributors included neighboring business owners, a high school Gay/Straight Alliance and individual members of the Ann Arbor police force.

On February 17, the day of the protest, Phelps’s band numbered only four adults and two small children. Instead of confronting the hate-mongerers and giving them the attention they craved, over one hundred community members and supporters gathered in the bar on a Saturday afternoon, celebrating while they counted the minutes that Phelps’s cronies stood outside raising money for Ann Arbor’s gay community.

That afternoon WRAP Board member Linda Lombardini received one notable pledge. “A father and his young son were driving past the bar and saw the protestors out front,” she explained. “The son asked his father who they were and what they were doing there. The father stopped the car and brought his son into the restaurant to demonstrate to him that gay people are no different from anyone else. When he realized that we were holding a fundraiser he handed his son a ten-dollar bill to give to me.”

“We view this as a form of economic containment,” Orr said. “Phelps is free to spread his message, however perverse we find it, wherever he wants. The First Amendment protects his right to do that. But we turned what could have been a negative into a positive. This has been an incredible community-building experience for us.

“We hope that cities and towns across the country will do this everywhere he goes. I get a charge thinking that every time he hits the road he will help us build our communities and fund our organizations.”

If I was in your area, I would love to be part of your protest. Despite the fact I would LOVE to hurt this man in front of his whole congregation, that's just wrong. There are other brilliant ways to do it, such as allowing this devil and his whole hate mass to show their ignorance, spite and how bad their souls are.

Is there someway you can get a gay friendly church to appear and pray in front of these bastards?

I think protesting these people is actually the wrong step. They once came to my school and everyone in my class decided to walk out and protest but me. Why did I stay? Because a lot of the reason why he gets to do what he does is because of the attention everyone gives him. And look what happens? He disrupts everyone from their routines and lives. Well, frankly, I think the best thing to do is just not pay attention. If everyone stopped paying attention, then his tactics would cease to work. Beside, how many people are really on his side? Essentially, it's everyone versus him, so you're not achieving anything from protesting aside from giving him the attention he wants.

Side note, this is also how a lot of these people make money. They stage these gatherings, trying to incite someone in the audience to violence. Ever notice how they constantly videotape themselves? As soon as someone strikes them, they have evidence and can sue them.

Call campus police and complain about disturbance.

If you can get a gay friendly church to pray in front of them, to pray that their hatred is wrong, then great!

Meanwhile, in the belltower, a sniper readies to take out the cameramen. Waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger. Watches as the victim let out a last gasp and stumbles to the ground.icon_twisted.gif

No no no....you've ALL GOT IT WRONG. As usual.

Here's what to do: go up to Fred and stick your tongue down his throat. That should shut him up for a second or two.
