I have been constantly been having these feelings of " is this it?.. is that all?" with a bunch of things in my life... relationships, work, school.... life. I just feel like all the paths that are what you are supposed to do... are to boring. I mean to get a job, buy a house, and settle down it all sounds boring. I mean I want to have a family and want to raise kids... god I want kids lol, but the normal paths that I am supposed to take seam so boring to me..... I feel like there has to be something more exciting in life..... Does anyone know what I mean? or get what I am saying?

You poor dear, I'm surprised that you haven't been hunted down and incarcerated by the relentlessly upbeat Babbitts of the world . . . rest assured that there are others who share your intimations of inanity . . .

Have you see the movie "Revolutionary Road"? We all have feel like that sometimes. I use to think about quitting my job and go backpacking all over the world, becoming a farmer and start a business and other wild idea. But then I realize life is what you make of it. I can be a backpacker or a farmer or a business men and life can still be as boring.

Probably you need to look into your interest and start doing it. I discover I love motorbiking , travelling and gardening. What stopping me from doing it now, while working at my job. Just like in the movie, you dont have to go to Paris to have ALL those things you desire. I am sure you have off day and annual leave,do you ? Start using in and do the adventure that you want to do. I for one, cant wait for Saturday to come , simply because I have so many fun stuff that I already plan to do.

The 6-words I used to describe my life were "First Toil, Then The Grave. Ugh".
But I don't have that thing JP mentioned so I still find satisfaction in even routine chores....completing them at least and checking them off the list.

Not sure I fully understand what would represent a unique or more interesting path.
    Example?

I'm picturing one salmon swimming upstream, turning to another and asking "Is this IT?"

You feel that having to go through the daily routine of life is boring? School, work, relationships all seem hopelessly mundane? Better find some meaning in them soon unless you have some alternative ready. And even if you did -- winning the lottery, for example -- you'd quickly become bored with your lack of purpose.
For now, just get on with it and eventually the rewards will come.

I think in this case it's healthy to talk about this with friends, a mentor, a family member, perhaps. You can possibly gain more insight into why you feel this way and maybe make a change. Or, it could be a phase.

Boredom is a useful emotion. To me it is life's way to let you know you have to shake things up a bit. Zakzahriol's post is getting at the same thing.

As someone who has battled depression all his life I can relate. But I think it's also a fairly usual experience to wonder why life doesn't feel that exciting. I wonder how much popular culture and advertising contribute to this malaise. We are bombarded from all angles by messages that we are supposed to be living these purpose-driven, passion-saturated, ecstatic lives. Self-help books confront us with the message that life can always be better, happier, more successful. We watch movies and come out disappointed that our lives appear so mundane compared to the adventure heros or dramatic leads.

However, vast populations of people living in poverty across the world would consider such aspirations bewildering. The need to survive definitely makes life feel more alive - but also more painful and terrifying at times.

Maybe the buddhists have it right - that suffering has its roots in desire - the desire that things should always be different from what they actually are. Radical acceptance and with it gratitude may be an alternative to the endless quest for excitement and 'meaning'.

We make our own happiness. We have to decide whether to be "up" or "down". For me - almost getting killed (by being shot by a burglar) kicked me into gear when I was 17. Since then I try to make something good happen - every single day. If, at any time I ever thought of boredom, I remembered Christopher Reeve. What would he have given to be able to get out of that chair and do normal, simple things? When I thought of him - I never felt sorry for myself or bored in any way. Life is what you make it! Make a gratitude list and you might be happily surprised at how many things you have to be grateful for.

I feel like this all the time. I don't read into it so far as to think I'm depressed, but I worry if I'll ever be content. My job bores me to tears, my friends and family are great, but they don't challenge me, not to mention the fact that they don't really know me. I wanna go back to school, but I'm a fan of having good health insurance and am concerned about 1000$ deductibles.

I always think, 'once I get my shit together, I'll get a boyfriend, and be blissfully happy'. Clearly, I'm idealizing relationships, but that's what keeps me looking forward.

What's are alternatives that you might suggest for yourself?

What are things that really interest you?

In one of you other post you suggested you had gone through a depression but then had some kind of "spiritual" experience and you got your self-esteem back. It sounds like you are still having depression or anxiety about something.

Maybe you need to talk to someone about it. Other than that maybe you need to take up meditation .. I mean real meditation .. probably I mean stillness sitting to calm your mind. I think if you can get to the point that you can go somewhere (by yourself) free from distraction and just sit for an hour or two at a time and observe nature and just passively take in your surroundings that is something like I am talking about.

Some things that seem overwhelming have a way of working themselves out both in the world inside us and the world outside us. It is our perceptions and worries that over-complicate things.

Tao Te Ching 12Colors blind the eye.
    Sounds deafen the ear.
    Flavors numb the taste.
    Thoughts weaken the mind.
    Desires wither the heart.

    The Sage observes the world
    but trusts his inner vision.
He allows things to come and go.
His heart is open as the sky.

If you are not satisfied with the current state of your life, you do have the opportunity to do something about it. You like being around kids, then why not volunteer to help kids. They will give you the opportunity to not be bored, believe me, I volunteer for a children's hospital and sometimes I wonder are you even sick!? But seriously, helping kids doesn't seem like work at all. It'll be a benefit for all parties.
