I was leaving the gym the other day and as I was walking down the street, I saw this guy that goes to my gym smoking as he as actually going into the gym. Just doesn't feel right. Seems counter-intuitive, no?

Counter-productive also. People have always done weird things like this. During the jogging craze in the 1980's I knew several guys that would smoke while jogging.

I would agree. Plus it is so disgusting! I would never even think about dating a person who smoked. And if you are going to the gym to get in shape why the hell are you smoking...??

All of you are assuming they started working out before they started smoking. Perhaps they find it easier to help combat some of the unfortunate side-effects of tobacco use by taking better care of their bodies by working out than quitting. When I was growing up I remember by mother's doctor always telling her she was healthier than most non-smoking patients because she kept to a regular workout routine.

Also, isn't he just a little hot?

I'm not assuming anything. If I were to see a guy walking out out of the gym smoking, I would just think it was stupid... and unfortunate.

And as for the guy, yeah, he is kind of hot... but his stock just went down in my book because he's smoking.

I think this begs an interesting public health issue. The peoplewho need to use the gym the most are often the ones who would feel the most uncomfortable there: the unfit. Traditionally this is the overweight, and hence why we have gyms tailored specifically toward promoting positive body image. Since there seems to be such hostility towards smokers, maybe they need their own gym too to encourage them to workout? icon_smile.gif

Congrats and thanks for your post!!! Sounds like you have quit through positive reinforcement rather than the bitch-slap method that many think seems to work...

If you think that's bad, you should see how many people in the Army "have" to smoke one before and after a 4 mile run.

You would be shocked how many Dancers smoke. Those bun heads used to light up before and after audtions like mad! Talking about the male and females. Coke soft drink in one hand and Malboro lights in the other. Head shaker!icon_eek.gif I made sure that I was on the other side of the rehersal hall.

I never understood it, i recently stopped smoking and before i quit i'd be on my way to the gym and smoke a cig and think wait, wtf im going to work out this doesn't seem right at all. I started working out regularly two months ago and just completely quit smoking 10 days ago. It just doesn't seem right if your trying to get in shape and smoking at the same time. Although i never smoked very much at all it was still a bad habit.

I joined my gym last summer, the same week that I quit smoking, also the week I turned 25.

I since have started smoking again, consistently infrequent is what I like to call it. One a day, sometimes more, sometimes a couple days without one, but by no means a non-smoker again.

That being said, I would never have one right before the gym. The smoke police would give the stink eye my entire workout if they smelled cigarettes on me.

Now, on the way home from the gym, I have one sometimes. Probably the worst possible time to have a cigarette is after four miles on the treadmill. I should probably stop that.

"I should probably stop that." or instead of lighting up, have a sexy non-smoker handy after the gym to kiss for awhile. Reward therapy!

"I'm right on top of that Rose"

At this point, a cigarette is much easier to handle, and find.

There are all kinds of counterintuitive smoker behaviors. I used to be flabbergasted by some of the people in my choir who smoked. A few of them lost half an octave in range over the course of a year, and didn't seem to clue in as to why. A few of the members of the cross country team did as well. Odd.

heheh, we'll keep our radar out for someone that your hands won't be able to resist and who makes your lips tingle and auto-pucker.

PS didn't get the Rose quote. Is it 'cause we're old?

Haha, you might have seen it. It's from Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. In the movie, a boss(Rose) told her administrative assisant to say that out loud if the boss was on the phone and asked the assistant about a task. A task that was likely not going to get done anytime soon. Like quitting smoking and finding a sexy guy to make out with after the gym.

Well, we checked out your profile jlly_rnchr, and the sudden music made us jump a foot out of our chairs! heheh

You have a nice 'kisser' and wonderful eyebrows - love that. The bod is great like many others on here. Can't see you having too too much trouble finding someone to fit into those arms!

Best wishes for cutting back more and then eventually tossing the cigs.

I see this all the time. I'm not gonna judge a person if they smoke. But come on.. wait till you get home or out of vicinity of the gym.

One time I saw this lady walk out of the gym, and she had a cigarette in her mouth and a lighter ready to go before she even had one foot out the door. icon_lol.gif

What really bugs me is when people just hang out in the parking lot, have a couple of smokes, and then go inside to start their workout. Their sweaty/smoky odor can be nauseating if they're working out right next to you.
