in the middle of planning a getaway but have no clue where to start..is there a gay(ish) settlement anyone recommends? we're avoiding london, rome, barcelona paris, as they've been beaten to death mostly thru work..

more country village/villa, less circuit party atmosphere, so no ibiza...and since we'll be going for 2ish weeks, a big enough, but still quaint downtown is kosher...i like beach, he mountains, so a town in between is ideal..already been suggested nice, france?? all i know is that it's close to cannes, but it's offseason for that scene?? thanks.

Sitges Spain. It's on the beach, and it's one of the big gay tourist towns in Europe.

Well if you don't mind cold wet mountains and grey rolling seas. I recommend Manchester in the North of England. It's where the UK Queer as Folk was set.

I'm thinking you want glamour rather than industrial grime though..... icon_wink.gif

Nice, Marseille, and Valencia are supposed to have big gay scenes but these are larger mid-sized cities, so I dunno if that's what you're looking for.

I'm actually leaving for Valencia tonight, so I'll report back to you on that one icon_biggrin.gif

Let's see....in summer there are more beach resorts like Malaga, Marbella, and Torremolinos that have big gay scenes. Sevilla is also worth visiting, a beautiful city with historic architecture and good bar scenes. Cadiz, where I'm living now, is a fantastic beach city but the gay population here is much smaller than the reputation says. There are really only 2 gay establishments here in the offseason, although there are more gay tourists from Britain and Germany in the summer. For summer only, check out San Sebastian and Biarritz also, fantastic (quieter) little beach resorts on the Atlantic border of Spain and France.

Good luck w your travels, buen viaje!

Mykonos, Greece is LOADS better than Sitges. I was underwhelmed by Sitges (been twice now but just can't get into it - BCN is wayyyy better). It might work for a weekend, but 2 weeks is too long.

Seriously, Mykonos is a magical place. Nice relaxing beach or pool days, and the evenings can be as hectic / alcohol-infused as you like. I went with 17 other guys, rented two homes / villas by the sea and it was incredible. If you're going for 2 weeks, you could switch to another island (eg. Santorini) and really explore. Mykonos is mega-gay, and super-friendly. Several gay beaches (Elia being my fave), several gay bars & clubs and a good mix of tourists to meet. Very romantic place too.

    Other suggestions:
    - Nice, France: A little overrun by tourists but it's a cute little town and I really enjoyed the beach (this from an Aussie!). Plenty of day trips from Nice also, and Provence is also very beautiful and relaxing. Reasonably expensive though, and I'm not sure I'd go for 2 full weeks.
    - United Kingdom: UK is often overlooked but if you grab a car you can tour around some really interesting places. It's so compact too (relative to US/Oz). Manchester is fun for the gay scene but South-West England is picturesque, with a little bit of a scene in Bristol & Cardiff. Brighton (beach town south of London) was fun, but not somewhere to really park yourself for 2 weeks...
    - Alicante, Spain: Heard lots of great things about it, and it's on my to-do list. Not sure about 'gay-themed' interests though...

If you're after some hip hotels, use www.tablethotels.com for moderate to expensive places. So I'd recommend Mykonos as your first choice, and to get a villa. Alcohol there is expensive in bars, dirt cheap in the supermarkets, so a villa will help you stay in, cook, chill out, and do it all relatively inexpensively. Have fun!

Don´t even think of the UK in the winter. Or spring. Summer and early autumn only... Horrible country.

Valencia is meant to be beautiful. Sitges is probably to party scene for you. Sevilla, Granada stunning. Anything on the med coast is nice...

    OK I´m biased. ¡Viva España!

I agree, Sitges was fun but I wouldn't make it the focus of MY vacation unless you really wanted to slow down and just hang out at the beach all day.

Barcelona was awesome, my favorite city by far.

I spent a week in Alicante, I didn't really find it all that gay, but it was a nice city, much much bigger than I had anticipated.

In France I spent some time in St Remy in Provence and it couldn't have been more idyllic, and easy to get around for day trips.

Madrid was definitely gay friendly, lots of museums and restaurants but a big city with lots of tourists.

I think right now is a golden time to visit some of the former soviet bloc countries, Romania, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary etc, some great travel bargains, and it isn't too crowded with tourists yet.

We went to Verbier, Switzerland for a few weeks in January - def. a "go back" place - not too swamped with people.......some of the greatest skiing......ever.
I also like St. Moritz and Villars-sur-Ollon (some of the best views of the Swiss and French Alps.)

In France - I like St.-Jean-Cap-Ferrat; Porticcio (Corsica) and Dinard - all good, welcoming places for gay life - quiet or partying styles.

In Greece - I like Oia, Santorini - Oia is a villiage on the western most point of Santorini Island - and Katikies is the hotel you want there - built into a cliff above the blue cadera basin. I also like Peloponnese, Mykonos and Nikiti.

In Germany - I like Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt am-Main, Hamburg, Koenigstein and Munich.

There are so many more cool gay places - just ask an airline brat!
