My favorite is Will Young. His album "Let It Go" came out last fall and I ended up getting it from Amazon UK because I couldn't wait for the US to get it. A nice variety of moods and tones, coupled with Will's voice, made the album a permanent fixture in my iPhone's list of synced playlists. Great stuff. If you're getting through a breakup, you need this.

Rufus Wainright is AMAZING. I love love love his voice. My favorite song of his is Instant Pleasure. Also been listening to Semi Precious Weapons. They have kind of a glamrock thing going on and the lyrics are amazing. A few months ago I could not listen to enough Jay Brannan. All his lyrics are gay-centric and he has a beautiful folksy voice.

Isn't Maynard Keenan of Tool gay? I used to obsess over this band. Apparently I didn't obsess enough. . .

Darby Crash of The Germs. Really though I'm not too big a fan of this stuff. Too lo-fi, too "punk."

DITTO on Rufus! I could listen to him all day. He can drive you to tears with one song and then turn right around and make you bust up laughing in the next one. Plus, he's an excellent showman!

I'm a big fan of Jeffrey Altergott myself. I have all of his CD's, and a few pieces of his glasswork...

a few singers that come to mind are:

kele okereke of bloc party. their debut album was one of the strongest releases i've heard in quite some time; and when i found out that their lead singer was gay, i loved them even more. it put a whole new twist to their songs for me. their track, the prayer (off their second album), is an excellent song to lift to.

jonsi birgisson of sigur ros. i doubt the majority of people on this site would have an ear for this icelandic band, but they make beautiful music and jonsi is openly gay, which is always a good thing.

brian molko of placebo is openly bisexual, but he's so cute that he should be included. placebo crafts great music, and they recently did a cover of kate bush's, running up that hill, that just memorizes me more than the original (although tori amos did come pretty damn close).

stephen merrit of the magnetic fileds and future bible heros (among other numerous side projects). he has to be one of the most creative lyricists i've come across; he's just damn funny. not the best looking man in the world, but his art is beautiful.

jay brannan from the movie, shortbus. he actually composes and performs his own songs( 'housewife' is a favorite) and is phenominally cute to boot. he looks good naked too (really, you should watch the movie. words fail me. then you can tell me what the ending was all about because i still don't really get it.)

and of course, bob mould, originally of husker du, then sugar, and now solo artist. he was the first artist who taught me that not all gay men have shitty taste in music. i've drawn a great deal of comfort from his works over the years. go bob go. you still rock.

there are a lot more out there, but these are the ones that are off the top of my head.

Am I too old school to include Morrissey? Always loved him, with or without the Smiths. And Scissor Sisters. Check out a kid named Sacha Sacket, too.

For that matter, how about the punked out competitor on the current season of American Idol. Damn, but the kid can sing.

Jay Brannan's got an incredible voice...and it was actually his singing that gave me the little push to come out (wait, gay people are good at things??? screw this closet...).

His songs "Body's a Temple" and "Housewife" are great, but my favorite still has to be Nina Gorgon's version of "Str8 Outta Compton" (slightly hysterical, but still sung amazingly):

Matt Alber is my new obsession. Ever since I saw this video on LOGO from his first solo CD, I had to resist internet-stalking him. I love this video, it's romantic, nostalgic, and masculinely gay at the same time. He was in the grammy-award winning acapella Chanticleer. His whole debut CD is very good. He streams it for free at www.mattalber.com:

I agree. Morrissey is my fave.

StretchOutAndWait saidMorrissey for sure. Didn't Billie Holiday dabble in lesbianism?

    Does Zac Efron count? icon_biggrin.gif

I agree with Timberoo. Sigur Ros is an amazing iceland band, and had a very gay-themed video:

Here is my favorite video by Sigur Ros, followed by the award-winning gay one.

    "Glósóli"

Rufus Wainwright and Eric Himan are my favorite male musicians, and Melissa Etheridge and God Dess And She are my favorite female musicians. I'm so glad that I live in a time and country where homosexuals can actually produce music openly for others. About damn time I have artists I can relate to more than before... /smile=)*

I'll second Matt Alber. Another good one is Ivre Leder, an out israeli pop singer. I am also partial to Tarkan, but there is some debate as to whether or not he is gay. (He denies it)
