do you consider fingernail trimming in public (coffee shop in this case) to be offensive or in poor taste?

some guy was sitting on the sidewalk, in the front of my fav place, trimming and filing his fingernails this morning...couldn't deceide if it was tacky or not.

    your thoughts, pls?

Highly offensiveicon_exclaim.gif Just suppose some of the clippings flew into a meal that you were eating. I've glared at people in the subway who were doing such. They soon got the message

Not sure what it is, but I think trimming your nails in public is one of the most disgusting things. That "snip, snip" sound gets my hackles up.

    Omg the subway nailclipping?

    WHY IS IT SO PREVALENT?

This one dude was clippiing 1cm long nails and the whole carriage was just transfixed in horror. I told him how gross he was being and he stopped. The glances I exchanged with fellow commuters were hilarious though.

Sighhhhhhhhhhhicon_exclaim.gif I wish I knew why it's so prevalent in subways. I'm on the verge of writing the MTA to ask them to make a public announcement about thisicon_smile.gif

Public fingernail trimming...hmmm...that's right up there with squatting on the sidewalk to take a shit, in my books.

LOL....you guys wouldn't like me then.
This public nail trimmer sounds like a man I could call friend. First of all, from what the OP describes, he was not inside, but outside on the sidewalk and if so, how is that poor taste? Sounds like the most rational thing since finger nails are biodegradable.

He was getting ready for his day the way I do most mornings, in acts. He had probably just fixed his hair a couple blocks down and now it was time for nail maintenance. It's the morning, noone is firing with a full magazine so give the guy a break.

If someone here really has time to notice little things like that and let it erk them, that's poor taste and kinda sad. Hmmmmm, let me glance over the posters who'd have issue with it................................Aaaauuhhhhh, I'm not surprised one bit by the respondents, a varitable who's who of RealJock's crabby bitch population. icon_rolleyes.gif

I think the issue is that grooming, for many people, is a personal thing. They groom themselves in the privacy of their bathrooms where no one ever watches them.

While cutting your fingernails in public is not necessarily gross, it feels gross to us because, for us, it's a private activity done in private. It just feels icky when we see people doing it so publicly. Like watching someone pick their nose.

There's nothing wrong with the act (so long as you properly collect and dispose of the... "waste") -- it just confronts our individual social habits of private grooming with a very public alternative.

Once when I was in this locker room I saw some guy clipping his nails on a bench. I just didn't want to step on any of the clippings that he wasn't picking up. He was only wearing a towel and his balls were hanging out, he didn't seem to mind.

Do you really want to talk about "social habits" and alternatives that cause discomfort, gay man. As usual, I'm saying, relax. I should think seeing people seemingly unfettered by societies "norms" would comfort most gay men. I bet this nail guy doesn't even care who you love. He strikes me as the sort.

Actually though, Rezdylan....you don't find it sorta hot when you spy a guy in public, combing his hair in plain view or straigthening it in a store front window. I like it when men fix their tuck in plain view...woof. Actually, the thought of a grizzly old bear in public, preening his claws in front of my "favorite" place, well that's a thought that just made my evening brighter. Back on topic, with so many men who disregard the importance of nail maintenance....just another reason to like the nail guy.

One time, I was taking a bus to work from College Park, MD to Laurel, because I totaled my car months earlier.

The buses were not too crowded, so you could always find a seat where you weren't touching someone else. Well, at one of the stops, a very very large woman got on and she sat down next to me (but really, sat on me). I don't know why she sat there, there were plenty of seats NOT next to an uncomfortable skinny kid. She was like spilling on to me. Very awkward, but I stayed put, didn't want to be rude. She settled in for a little while, and then she made her move. She lifted her leg and propped her foot up on her other knee. She fished around in her purse for, yes, nail clippers. And then she proceeded to clip her toenails into her purse.

    I got up after that.

There's a guy at my work that trims his nails at his desk. He tries to be discrete about it, but it's hard not to hear the little "click-click" of the nail clippers. icon_lol.gif

Definitely tacky, but I would'nt make issue if he's actually picking up the nails. I've met people that trim and don't even pick up the nails. THAT is disgusting. There's a lot of filth under them and they can be sharp. NOT COOL!

OH, even worse are the nail biters - I met [and soon lost] someone that chewed his own toe nails. YUCK!!!

Couldn't agree more. I've had a coworker do this at work (I assume it was not her toes, but still!), though even when guys do this at the gym I cringe. Do this in the privacy of your own home, please.

You asked why people are so uptight about this. I gave it some thought and provided a pretty reasonable answer.

The point I'm trying to make, though (and it may have been lost in my original post), is this: discomfort is individual. e.g. I find public nose-picking gross. In Japan, public nose-picking is common; they obviously don't think it's gross. When you really think about it, there's nothing all that gross about it, but because I was raised in a society that considers it gross, I'm still instinctively grossed out. But just because I think it's gross doesn't make it actually gross. It's all subjective, y'all. icon_wink.gif

For me, any time there's the possibility of... leaving behind your bodily waste, it's probably best to keep that activity more private than not.

I worked in a small "business" where the staff all dined together. One of the dietary cooks was sitting at coffee one morning, using a small kitchen knife to clean the grunge out from under her nails, and she was doing it over her coffee mug. At the lunch table. While we watched. Clipping your nails anywhere other than your own personal non-eating space is just as disgusting.

Some guy did this ALL the time when I commuted on NJ Transit out into the suburbs. It drove me CRAZY all the time. I think it's because it's something I do in the bathroom, etc... I think it's be weird/gross if people cut their hair on the train too.
