"Dildar"? .....oh, that's not going to play too well when he gets to the States. Maybe he should americanize it to "Dillon" or "Darryl" or something?

firehawk is in Iraq, and I respect his attempt to chat with us in English (assuming this is legit).

Dear firehawk: It is not better to be str8 or gay, but to be what you really are inside. It is good to be gay, and good to be str8, but you should be the thing you were born to be.

Did you say you like men more than women? In the United States gay men can be friends and have fun together, and not have sex. I do not know how gay men behave in Iraq, except I understand that it is illegal in Islamic law to be gay, yes? Are men in Iraq afraid to be gay?

I have eaten dolma, it is OK. My favorite is seafood, especially lobster & crab.

FireHawk could be Christian, in which case homosexuality would be no less illegal. He lives in Arbil, which is the capitol of the Kurdish Autonomous Region, their government is not based on Islamic law. That doesn't mean homosexuals aren't considered deviant, an Arbil doctor was recently fined and imprisoned for six months for writing an article in the newspaper that talked about homosexuality from a scientific standpoint (among other manifestations of human sexuality), found guilty of offending public decency as a result.

The Baathist Iraqi government was secular, homosexuality was never illegal, sodomy was not illegalized until 2001 under pressure from religious authorities. Hole-in-the-wall gay bars did exist in the 80s until the first Gulf war. From north to south however, homosexuality is rejected culturally and it is and has always been taboo. In the current post-Saddam government, secularism has been thrown out and Islam has been declared the substratum of law constitutionally.

I can't speak on what it's like being gay in Iraq since I don't live there (was brought up by Iraqis in the midwest), but the above should imply that it isn't easy [understatement].

    ps I love dolma.
