And we thought the christian right were bad here !!! This must be very hard on those men over there. Does anyone know, was it this bad on gay men under Sadams Secular Dictatorship? Here's another case where religion is behind hate.

It was not officially this bad for gay men under Saddam. But prejudice did exist.

Since the Bush invasion of Iraq, Sharia law has taken greater hold there. But US Republicans did not object, since they hate gays anyway, and their Neo-con goals took priority over the deaths of gay men.

Unfortunately, the new Obama Administration will be unable to halt this anti-gay trend, without losing political support in Iraq at a critical juncture. Gays in Iraq will find no friends anywhere, neither among US Republicans who wish them dead, nor among Democrats who will rationalize the need to placate Islamic interests. Gays have no future in post-Saddam Iraq.

There were hole-in-the-wall gay clubs in the 80s up until the first Gulf war, after which Saddam added the words "God is Great" to the flag, cracked down on any facility that could serve as an establishment for uprisings, and legalized honor killings. Sodomy however wasn't illegal until two years before 2003 invasion.

Islam is cemented in the new Iraqi constitution, the word of Islamic clerics and militia leaders is dogma to their mass followers, and even in the most liberal areas of the country, speaking about homosexuality in a newspaper from a scientific perspective is considered an attack on public decency...so if gays weren't screwed before, they're definitely screwed now.

But then most radical Islamic states are no different than the other in that homosexuals are persecuted more so than they've ever been in America. However, in countries like Turkey, Israel, and Morocco, homosexuals aren't ostracized so bad. I went to those countries and found a lot o incredibly friendly Islamic an Arabic people. Unlike what the media would have us believe, not all Arabs are turban-wearing, scimitar-wielding infidel haters. The more developed and modern Arabic countries are quite progressive.

Hate is hate. Where it be from a left wing gay guy, or a right wing christian guy; hate is hate. It "tis truly a fine line that divides the left wing haters, and the right wing haters.

Saddam was a dictator in a Muslim country. Homosexuals were not welcome, or safe.
