Find a new doctor. Ease back into it slowly, unless you have serious injury. At your age, you should investigate HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), if you haven't already. It'll help add years to your life, prevent disease, make you feel better, help you stay injury free, and allow you to remain athletic longer.

I suffered from this for years and i can tell you some things that finally worked for me.

You don't necessarily need to stop lifting, (1) start doing wrist curls and other exercises that strengthen your forearms. (2) stop doing any exercises with barbells and use dumbbells exclusively, this will allow you to vary your wrist positions to ones that don't cause pain. (3) if anything is causing pain immediately stop doing it. (4) if it gets aggravated during a workout ice down your elbow afterward.

Maybe take the time to concentrate on developing your legs or other neglected areas like cardio, while you are rehabbing the elbow.

I agree. I avoided anything that caused the pain. Had to adapt some of my lifting accordingly - but was able to find a way to cover everything. Time is what will heal this. Unfortunately - it is a lot of time.
