Top Priority: Chest or Shoulders?

I love a classic athletic build, the kind you see on fitness models who haven’t developed a bodybuilder shape. But what I REALLY love is a guy whose shoulders are a bit big in proportion to his chest. In fact, give me a slim man with a tight core, decent pecs, and really broad shoulders, and I’m in heaven.

So many gay men, however, seem to focus on the chest in their workouts, especially newbies. They end up with chests that are big in proportion to their shoulders, and they don’t look much like athletes (most sports require a lot more shoulder action than chest, I think). It’s not sexy to me.

Does anyone else share my preference or is it all chest, chest, chest for you guys?

Chests are great, but a great set of shoulders give me a hot flash.

I wonder if chests get more attention because shoulders are so easy to injure?

Squarejaw, I agree 100%. Yes a nicely shaped/developed chest drives me nuts, but I love when the shoulders(and sometimes arms) are prominent. But I guess it all really depends on the proportions of a guy's frame.

i agree, i am more a shoulders fan than chest. they help create the classic masculine V torso shape, of course with the back too. puffy chests dont do that much for me. but beautiful round, defined ripped shoulders give me that special feeling! i wish to get my shoulders bigger.

For me it depends. Both are different "looks" and both turn me on in different ways.

I'm a big fan of the lean-and lanky look. But more and more recently I like guys with a "solid, powerful" build.

To me, they are just different "types" that turn me on in different ways.

One thing that makes me happy about myself: I seem to be right in the middle, or something. When I'm with a guy who is bigger than me, often what he's attracted to about me is how narrow my waist is, whereas when I'm with a guy who is not as built as me, he's usually attracted to the size of my chest. LOL. Which goes to show, I guess, that it's all relative.....

hi ppl... but i feel that guys with big chest is not hawt because its totally not in proportion and also it looks weird on you if u are?? no offence but because it like can u imagine ppl with big chest what they really loook like is a BIG FISHBALL STUCK WITH TWO TOOTHPICK. basically is not proportion if you that or who ever is suppose to train always consider the other parts of the body..
well a comment from a young boi... hope its not offence and i agree with u
i think stamina is more important than workout for muscle i think..

Proportion. That's what works for me - while I can certainly appreciate, for example, a li'l guy with huge arms, or a thin guy with incredible pecs, the well-balanced body wins out every time.

Maybe it's the trainer in me - there's a very VERY tall guy at our gym who is skin & bone, except for an absolutely huge pair of pecs (and a big dick).

I can appreciate what he's accomplished with the chest, but when I see him, all I really think about is how out of balance he is.

Gotta have the shoulders! I've seen guys who have these broad shoulders but have no chest (just a perfect rack of ribs) and it's just wrong... even if one's more importantyou've gotta maintain some proportion or it just looks goofy!

big shoulders and arms are sexier than huge pecs with stick arms and bony shoulders, it looks wierd and supid .. beside, big soulders and arms give you the athletic upside-down trialngle shape which is very sexy!!

Squarejaw, though I am a chestman myself (for play reasons) icon_lol.gifWhat pulls the entire torso together is a set of delts. Shoulders in addition to giving you a much more manly powerful LQQK, they greatly enhance the Appearance of the Chest. As there is a direct Deltoid~Chest tie-in. Shoulders pull the pecs upwards helping to elevate that Sagging Pecs Sydrome appearance.
The problem with shoulder work is, it burns like hell, and if done correctly you would barely be able to lift your arms afterwords!

It is not difficult to develop or maintain a set of Decent shoulders regardless of the body type. Light reps and a commitment to build them is all you need. Shoulder Injuries BTW, normally ocurr in people who do not work their shoulders. They occur when using LOUSY form when performing other exercises. A simple 3 set warmup doing 10# dumbells, an excercise called a sitting (or standing) T's will warm the area up!

I totally agree with you SJ...
But that kind of body...broad shoulders and long and lean torso is fairly hard to get and maintain
and only if you have the right type of body to begin with
...most guys find it Easier to work the chest
the chest muscles aren't as finicky when it comes to over training and aren't as injury prone as well

OK, that pic of the red-headed monster is in the Halloween spirit. It's frightening. I think you're pretty much right Squarejaw. I don't like seeing a guy that's over-done his chest at the expense of shoulders and back. There's nothing better than a nice, broad back with great set of wide shoulders and a chest that is proportionate.

Squarejaw, I totally agree. I think the shoulders are my favorite part of a man's body. Really that whole area from shoulder to shoulder, including traps and upper chest, when nicely developed...YUM.

Good topic, Squarejaw. From a purely narcissistic point of view, I appreciate your opinion, because shoulders come easy for me, but not chest.

I love the v-outline of a strong-shouldered man. The obsession with pectorals seems strangely akin to heterosexuals and tits. As much as I love curling up on a lover's chest, another set of pillows is not necessary. icon_lol.gif

Actually, lolgarret, the look you've described applies more to those who overdevelop their chests, not their shoulders. Look at the more muscular male fashion models, the non-waifs who are paid to look good in clothes. Their runway pictures show a lot more dedication to shoulder workouts than to chest workouts.

    @lolgarret
check to see if your cap lock work
    your way loud

on another note i love a good chest but without the shoulder to match it often doesn,t look right
same could be said about broad shoulders their great but with a flat chest nah
