    From the Pittsburgh newspaper today....

President Barack Obama bowed before Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah at the G-20 summit in London last week. And much is being made of it in some circles.

In the least, it was an embarrassing protocol faux pas; Mr. Obama is not the king's subject but his equal. The Washington Times called it "a shocking display of fealty to a foreign potentate." But "The Bow" actually was worse than that. It's a troubling metaphor for a deferential presidency.

Think North Korea. It provocatively fires a missile that, though it fails to deliver a "satellite" into Earth's orbit, represents a technological step that advances the communist country's ability -- or that of some other rogue state to which it sells the technology -- to someday deliver a nuclear warhead to Hawaii or Alaska. The president's response? Propose nuclear disarmament and urge United Nations action, which, predictably, never comes.

Think economics. Mr. Obama talks of defending capitalism but his actions only hasten the pace of the creeping crud of socialism. And he only undermines confidence in any recovery by fully embracing subservience to the kind of European policies that keep unemployment high, growth and innovation low and government not merely as some bothersome and wasteful middleman but as the economy's commandant.

America doesn't bow, Mr. President. It leads. It's time you do so.

First, the OP says "The Pittsburg newspaper." Exactly WHICH Pittsburg newspaper would that be, and what is their editorial slant or spin?

Secondly, maybe Obama was not showing fealty, but rather, RESPECT, something many of our "Ugly American" presidents of the last few decades have often failed to excercise.

We have developed a very arrogant reputation in the world of late. Maybe Obama is trying to set a better example.

So if Obama bowed to a Japanese man he would be a spineless pussy as well? Even though thats a greeting and sign of respect?

    Uh, what?

I read today on the huffington post, that the repugs who are making a big deal about this bow, somehow forget the bush family alegiance/connections to a Saudi family by the last name of Bin Laden, and that upon one of dubya's visits he did the ceremonial kiss to the king. 'ewe' !!!! 'how gay is that' !!!! maybe some of the repugs on the far right should have made something of that !!! makes as much sense for me to bring that up as it does for the repugs to bring up this bow. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Dubya was so busy breaking laws on torture, illegal surveilance, taking away Habeaus Corpus rights, rendering prisoners to 'black sites' (some are still missing), but none of that was of any concern to the bible toteing right, but obama appears to have bowed, and the bible toters are hollering he's making our toturing christian superpower look subservient. WHAT A CRISIS !!!

AMEN! I respect a bit of humility. He knows we have things to be ashamed of, and he's not necessarily outright apologizing in detail - just showing a little more respect.

Big deal. He bowed. He denied it. Next. Our previous President could barely speak without tripping over his own words and he tried to exit out of a locked door. If bowing makes Obama a wimp, what was George Bush?

Either he's brilliant and lulling world into thinking the US is becoming a bastion for pacifist pusses, so he can then launch a "Team America" cleanse of the planet OR he truly is a giant sham (and not the wow kind) who is not equipped to lead what was/is the most powerful nation on the planet..... his presentations to foreign dignitaries are also laughable, your Majesty, here is a collection of my speeches, with opening dialogue from Oprah, the woman who got me elected. Arrogant much? Very disrespectful of the Queen who has lived through decades of world history, advised numerous British PMs and other world leaders. Be proud USA, this truly will be a historic presidency.

First, what would you have him do? We tried threats under Bush, what did that do? Second, you realize that the test was a dud right? Someday, oh let me tremble. Do you know how long it will be before N.Korea can target the US? The "President's response" as you put it was not made because of the launch. It was a speech planned well before the launch and made passing reference to it. It was not a response. Get your facts straight.

The UN is a deliberative body and the security council is made up of countries (Russia and to some extent China) that don't like to support us, but they will come around. Slow action on the part of the UN is nothing new. The test occurred last week would you have expected increased sanctions or an authorization of military force within that time?

Think economics. Mr. Obama talks of defending capitalism but his actions only hasten the pace of the creeping crud of socialism. Did you independently conclude that socialism is approaching? I like how after Palin/McCain put that out there suddenly the sheep started bleeting "socialism". I just wonder how many would have reached that particular conclusion by themselves. What European policies keep unemployment high? What subservience has Obama embraced fully? Let's see European growth and innovation is low, as compared to what? It is actually the US that has consistently rejected market regulation based on a religious adherence to capitalism. Well, look how well that's turned out. If anything they (Europe) is subservient to us, it was our securitization of debt and uncontrolled lending that triggered the current GLOBAL economic crisis. So take your own advice and THINK. You're talking out of your arse.

Finally, a president who actually shows respect for other nations and their dignitaries, and more importantly, who realizes that the US is not the center of the universe. As always, republicans and their mindless followers have turned a simple gesture into a pointless attack; it's sad they are so desperate, and so desperately clinging to the remains of what is clearly a dying party.

Man, what in the FUCK is your problem? Obama is truly the most respectful AND respectable president we've had since Kennedy, and certainly the most intelligent, which is a lot more than can be said for some of your remarks. I would think Canadians like you (I'm assuming, of course) would be thrilled that your incredibly powerful neighbor to the south finally has a president who truly knows how to be a citizen of the world, instead of an American imperialist!

Well, as overblown as this whole subject is....typical for poor losers as the Republicans obviously are (considering all the criticism they've been dishing out in the three months of Obama's presidency)...I'd rather have a President make a "gaft" such as that that than doing all the fucking in private like G.W. did. I'm sure he was in their palaces taking it every which way and asking for more. Fucking puke of a President! How much money do you think that asshole made out with playing with the Saudi royalty?
And you know what, maybe it's about time America shows a little common courtesy and respect to the rest of the World. Just because you're a world leader, which I have no idea how America is still considered such...yet another thing we're probably indebted for...doesn't mean you bully yourself intoand out of positions as the Repukelicans love to do.
I've been out of the US since November (the Middle East, Italy, Switzerland), and I can definitely tell you, the image of Obama is FAR, FAR, FAR greater than G.W., and he is already more respected and has done nothing but help improve the image of America across the World. I've never seen foreigners react with smiles, anticipation, and excitement for a US President as I've seen happen in many of the places I have been when they see Obama. There's more leadership in Obama's little toe in 3 months than G.W. EVER had in 8 years of his reign.
