    Story Highlights

Fareed Zakaria: New Pentagon budget is a big, bold shift in priorities

He says it cuts costly, low-return projects like new presidential helicopter

Congressional opposition is forming over cuts to pork spending, he says

Zakaria: Shift is long-overdue adjustment to how we really fight wars today

"Gates acknowledged that parts of the budget are likely to run into significant opposition on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers are concerned in part about preserving valuable defense contracts for their districts and states."

The lost of money in congressional districts is always the big bugaboo in getting rid of useless, expensive projects....even when the military says they dont need some new fangled weapon or aircraft.

I have been quietly predicting this for years. I am surprised though that reality is sinking in this quickly. I thought the defence budget battle would take place near the end of the next decade due to the explosion in entitlement costs. I guess the financial crises is claiming another victim. Even the Pentagon is forced to become pragmatic when trillion dollar deficits are projected.

The defence contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Northrup are smart though. They spread around the work for these multi-billion dollar projects to ensure maximum political clout. I would not be surprised if President Obama and Defence Secretary Gates have to back-off on some of the programs that are on the chopping block.
