RIVER EDGE, NJ – A new national survey of gay and lesbian car owners conducted by gaywheels.com demonstrates the promise and potential of the gay and lesbian market as a source of new car sales for more brands than once thought.

ccording to the survey results, 67% of both gay male and lesbian car buyers consider companies exhibiting gay‑friendly behavior “very or somewhat important, where gay friendly is defined predominantly by offering domestic partner benefits.” The survey results found that both gay men and lesbians believe Subaru is the most gay‑friendly car company – 45% of respondents cited the company in the survey results. Subaru has been widely recognized for its advertising and partnerships targeting the LGBT community. Volkswagen and Ford placed a distant second and third for both segments.

Despite their brand awareness as being gay-friendly, Subaru is noticeably absent among the top brands owned by either Lesbians or Gay Men. Toyota held the top spot for both.

“One of the most interesting findings is that Subaru is not the most popular brand with either Gay Men or Lesbians. Toyota holding the top spot is not a surprise; they sell more cars” said gaywheels.com's founder Joe LaMuraglia. “What really stands out is when we compared market share of the LGBT New Car buyer in this study to the overall market. Subaru isn’t in the Top 10 for Gay Men and is only fourth for Lesbians”.

The survey reveals that Gay Men are 18 times more likely than the general population to own a Saab, five times more likely to own an Audi and four times more likely to own a MINI, VW or Jaguar. Lesbians are 11 times more likely than the general population to own a Saab, five times more likely to own a Scion and three times more likely to own a Jeep, Subaru or Saturn.

Of course I drive a Honda. I've heard its one of the few companies that doesn't allow benefits for same sex couples who are employed. I guess that would make Honda owners the "Republicans" of the auto world icon_wink.gif

I've owned a Subaru, Ford, and VW. My favorite has been the VW (Golf TDI) and it was a sad, sad day when it got totalled by a semi. icon_cry.gif

Gaywheels' bar graph is suspect. It doesn't include the BMW 3 series, a gay icon!

    Hmm.

I like Subarus. Haven't owned on (yet). I seem to be stuck in Europe...save one poor domestic.

    I've currently got a '74 Triumph TR-6, an '88 Volvo 740 station wagon (that's a hot rod - LOL), the '92 Jeep Cherokee (that's rolled in the pics) and an '04 BMW X5 4.4i

I am rather shocked that BMW didn't make the list...I know quite a few with them...
And Jeep's always seem to be high on the list as well, particularly Wranglers...

When it comes to cars and trucks I buy what I like and as you can see in the background of my photo it's Chevrolet. Now I don't know if GM is gay friendly or not but that would not influence my decision to buy.

I would take the survey results lightly. The sampling group was pretty small. And they didn't indicate the method for collecting the day, the region, or the ages, income, etc, etc.

But yeah, I think it's inaccurate to say that consumers of a certain demographics will buy X product if a celebrity spokesperson of the same demographics endorses it.

I consider 3 things when buying a vehicle. How long until I have to replace/repair the damn thing, how much gas will it consume, and how much does it cost.

    The answer: Toyota Corolla.
/Wish they would make a hybrid for it... Civic Hybrid may be my next... or if the Chevy Volt turns out to be a decent quality car, though I am not holding my breath.

wetboypdx - I'm putting down a deposit for a 2010 Golf TDI as soon as the dealer is willing to take it. I'm so in love with those cars!

EDEric - Toyota is making a Yaris hybrid.... If you can stand the weird centered dash layout. As an alternate you can buy my current civic hybrid when my candy white VW comes icon_wink.gif

Not until my 99 Corolla can't move. So I am thinking sometime around 2020, if I give up early. icon_biggrin.gif

So according to this survey, I was 5x more predisposed to choose my 06 Audi A4. Hmm, interesting. All along I thought it was the engine, amenities and overall design that makes me lust over almost every vehicle Audi produces. I have had three Audi's and never cared what there position on homosexuality was, it's all about the vehicle to me! Someday, an R8 will be mine! icon_biggrin.gif

I own a Subaru. I didn't know the company was considered very gay friendly. I guess I was drawn to them. . . or maybe my spidey senses tingling. But seriously love the car.

odd scion was the only toyota brand that got in the top 5..

Honda and Hyundai and I believe KIA are the 3 automakers who don't offer same sex partners benefits.

Does it ever run? I learned stick on my dads and he would always say that he wished he bought a gas can and lit it on fire right after he bought it. Fun cars though if they are running. I don't think I have ever owned a gay friendly car, had a 69 camaro, which I bet GM in 1969 wasn't gay friendly and now have an acura / honda front wheel drive piece of shit. Funny how if my dad didn't pay for a little bit of my car I would have had an audi and I guess I am 5 times more likely then the next man to get one... hmmm. O and Downeydjman, I am with you the R8 is my dream car, got to drive one when they first came out and will love it forever.

I've had one Suburu, an 89 Justy. It was very reliable and got over 40 miles to the gallon. It was pretty much a beer can on wheels.

I have car A.D.D. so I go through a lot of cars.
    Honda Civic
    Lexus IS300
    Scion TC
    Ford Mustang
    Porsche Boxter
    Infiniti G35

I guess scion was the only gay one... I don't know I sure felt like a fag in the boxter. I would have thought jeeps would be popular with the lesbians, thats what my cousin has.

    Hahaha -- good repostes!!!

Well, the surveyors/pollsters obviously did not check out Santa Fe, New Mexico! Huge lesbian population, pretty big gay population too -- and OMG the Outbacks and Foresters on the roads here, not to mention the Wranglers and the Expeditions and big Toyotas and Land Rovers... and hybrids in all forms if they're available. (Butt ugly Prius for example, and hybrid Ford and Toyota SUVs)

Me: an Audi allroad -- maybe the survey got that one right! lol And I have no clue as to the companies' social standings other than some promos about being "green"

I will drive Mercedes-Benz if they gay friendly or not...

But I think so far the gayest car must be a Nissan Micra Convertible icon_rolleyes.gif
