I'm just starting a "loose the fat" and get back in shape program and identifying my issues are easy (especially if your honest with yourself) I know I need to lay of the booze, Change my eating habits, and basically get of my butt and exercise but I need a few suggestions on exercises that will be low impact in regards to issues I have with my neck and back from past injuries

In the past when working out my back and/or neck will go out taking a few days to a week to recover and then I just don't jump back into the game. I love to run but know that a fast walk is probably better for me for now until I loose some of the pounds. Does anyone know of routines(s) that I can do at home to help strengthen my Neck and Lower Back that is very low impact so I can avoid the same issues again.

You should have someone show you the correct forms for each exercise that you do. I'm sure that if you lower your weight and concentrate on good form you could do the normal back/neck exercises with no problem. Additionally, you should consider stretching those parts of your body for a few minutes prior to any activity that you do.

I also used to stiffen my neck while lifting heavy weight on other body parts. I have to concentrate on relaxing those muscles during my reps in order to keep from injuring myself.

Lots of stretching, swimming, maybe some Tai Chi or some Yoga exercises.

I can highly recommend the Tai Chi Chuan.

It has been incredible for my flexibility and recovery from injury.

Look for a group in your communitty to learn, and practice at home on your own.

Awesome thanks very much for the response and your right about learning to relex my neck muscles during the excercise as I never thought about that before until you mentioned it and reflecting back I do that...

Thanks also for the reminder of stretching I honestly am the worst at remembering that. Thanks again and I think I will try the Ti Chi or Yoga I have heard that before but just slipped my mind.

Time to get this routine started :-)
