The early Johnny Weismuller films got away with surprisingly skimpy costumes for the era. He wasn't very hunky in our modern sense, though an Olympic swimming Gold Medalist, but delightfully underdressed. And like Sean Connery in the James Bond films, the standard against which all other Tarzans must be judged. BTW, this "Jane" is Mia Farrow's mother, the late Maureen O'Sullivan.

On an off-topic, but semi-related note, I heard that Brendan Fraser of George of the Jungle is gay. A friend of a friend was a gogo dancer and apparently saw him a lot with his boyfriend. I remember watching that movie thinking he was so hot. I was only 9.icon_redface.gif

The Pre-Code MGM movies are still surprisingly violent and erotic, and ultimately, Jane is more interesting than Tarzan (who, instead of the verbose, intelligent character in the novels is here a big, dumb animal). It was pressure from moral watchdog groups that really ruined the series; Jane had to cover up and slave away in the tree house, she and Tarzan's lust was blunted, and then a chirpy adopted son showed up to cap it all off with a yawn.

Chris Lambert from Greystroke arguably looked the closest to what Burroughs envisioned.

Blonde, bodacious Denny Miller from the '60s is often referred to as "The Surfer Boy Tarzan"

Speaking of Tarzan - here is a related gem from the mid 80s. What you get with an Italian New Wave dance outfit - Baltimora & Tarzan Boy!
