Please join us in sending an open letter to the Washington, D.C. City Council commending them for supporting the recognition of legal gay marriage.

On May 5th, the D.C. City Council will vote on whether to recognize same-sex marriages performed outside its borders. It is expected to pass with an overwhelming majority and be signed into law by the Mayor. Because of the city's unique legal standing, Congress will have the opportunity to vote on the issue. This will require Congress to hold hearings on the legality of the D.C. law as it relates to the Defense of Marriage Act. This is the first time Congress has has to deal with this issue since DOMA was signed into law in 1996.

David Catania, a D.C. Councilmember, plans to introduce legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in the District in the near future, moving our nation's capital further along the road to full equality. We thank Mr. Catania and the City Council for their commitment.

I have done my part by sending a letter to the city council of Washington DC to support that city's proposal for gay marriage.
