(Concord, N.H.) The state Senate’s Judiciary Committee has recommended that the Legislature reject legalizing gay marriage in New Hampshire.
The committee voted 3-2 Thursday against a bill that passed the House last month. Committee Chairwoman Deborah Reynolds, a Democrat, said she doesn’t think New Hampshire is ready for gay marriage. Republicans who voted against it said marriage is an institution created and defined by God as between one man and one woman.
Two years ago, the Legislature approved, and Gov. John Lynch signed, civil unions for gays, which provide all the rights of marriage, except in name.
Lynch has not said specifically whether he would veto the gay marriage bill

As usual, the republicans in New Hampshire like the GOP throughout the country are still pushing the ancient fairy tale that God intended marriage to be between a man and a woman when God did not create the institution of marriage, man created it. Hopefully the senate committee's negative actions concerning the gay marriage bill does not stop it dead in its tracks. If it does, then this is horrible news. What does that democratic committeewoman mean that New Hampshire is not ready for gay marriage. It is obvious that she is pandering to the narrow-minded right wing.

I have to disagree on New Hampshire being the last northeastern state to legalize gay marriage. I think the last northeastern state to legalize gay marriage is either going to be Pennsylvania or New York given the sizable and politically potent right wingers in parts of both states.

OutdoorMutt said Republicans who voted against it said marriage is an institution created and defined by God as between one man and one woman.

How can they say that when all through the Bible the men have mulitple wives? Solomon, wisest man in the world according to the Bible, had 700 wives and 300 concubines!

Oh just as an aside, remember the story of the two women fighting over a baby and they went to Solomon to settle the dispute. And Solomon said cut the baby in half and give half each mother. Did they tell you in Sunday School that those two women were prostitutes?!?! ... icon_eek.gif ... but then again werent most women in the Bible prostitutes? ...icon_rolleyes.gif

The Bible is very plastic for Republicans and other bigots. It means whatever they want it to mean, at any given moment, to suit whatever purpose they have. You must understand that a Republican first starts with personal prejudices, and then finds their justification in the Bible, or in the US Constitution, or in the Lying Limbaughs in the media.

But this is where I think we need to know our Bible so we can stop their stupid statements in their tracks...or verses .... icon_lol.gif

Right now my favorite passage in the Bible is Amos 4:6. God gets so mad at the ancient Isrealites that he afflicts them with clean teeth! ... icon_eek.gif ... blighted orchards, plagues, droughts, starvation, destroyed cities, ...and clean teeth. ....That'll larn those ancient Isrealites.

Here's the Hebrew, if anyone can confirm the English translation of "clean teeth"

Oh and tell me if this isnt an apt description of Sarah Palin:

Proverbs 11:22 "Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman without good sense." ... kinda does "lipstick on a pig" a bit better. ... icon_lol.gif ... and it is straight from her precious Bible.

    כב נֶזֶם זָהָב, בְּאַף חֲזִיר-- אִשָּׁה יָפָה, וְסָרַת טָעַם.

"Republicans who voted against it said marriage is an institution created and defined by God as between one man and one woman."

Isn't it ironic that the civil marriage license has to be signed before any church can proceed with the ceremony?

Nah, didn't ya read what the Repubs said? The civil servants are acting on behalf of God, not you & me. This is God's government, not the peoples. I thought everybody knew that... jeesh! icon_razz.gif

and I myself gave to them cleanness of teeth in all their cities and want in all their plazas, and yet they did not return to me [repent], oracle of YHWH

"cleanness of teeth" is in parallel with "want", just as "cities" is in parallel with "plazas". It´s referring to starvation. The response of the "cows of bashan" (rich bitches) to their suffering was meant to be that they turned back to YHWH, as is also the point in vv 7-11.

Back to the point: SEPARATION OF STATE AND CHURCH. That surely means that we can´t invoke the name of God to deprive citizens of equal rights as the state and therefore its decisions are SECULAR.

"Republicans who voted against it said marriage is an institution created and defined by God as between one man and one woman."

That's debatable - what does that have to do with civil marriage anyway? Why do religious conservatives feel like they have to assert their beliefs onto other people or make them into government law? Don't they realize they are going against the principles of this country by doing so?

"Two years ago, the Legislature approved, and Gov. John Lynch signed, civil unions for gays, which provide all the rights of marriage, except in name."

    And that's not against God?..

Like Red Vespa said, most religious conservatives use the Bible in a very plastic way, to suit whatever their agenda is. This is nothing new, as we all know. The Bible was used to "defend" America against interracial marriage and womens' rights as well.

It's just a matter of time before we arrive at another Brown vs Board "separate is not equal" YET AGAIN. We just have to keep pushing our efforts.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Looks like the bill is dead in New Hampshire this year, and possibly until after the next elections in 2010. There is still hope for some action in Maine and New York this year.
