Has anyone travelled Greece? The BF and I and some friends will be there in mid-May and wondering if anyone has travelled it before and has tips on what to see? I want to see Santorini and Mykonos but I don't know the best way to plan out the details/logistics...

Thanks in advance, all ye fellow gay traveller brethren.

If you're going to to Athens for a few days or so I'd recommend staying near Syntagma, Plaka, or Kolonaki. A lot of the ancient sites are walkable from there and the areas themselves are pretty nice.

In Athens I'd recommend seeing the Acropolis of course, the Agora, the National Archeological Museum, and the Temple of Zeus. There is of course a lot more than that to see in the city but those are the big ones IMO. The city is positively littered with historical sites.

If you have the time and the inclination I'd also highly suggest seeing Delphi (site and museum) if possible. It's a couple hour trip (bus, car, etc) from Athens but totally worth it.

Also, there are sights on the Peloponnese that could be of interest like the Corinth Canal, Ancient Corinth, Mycenae (really neat), and the nice port town of Nafplio.

I'd save the islands for the latter part of the trip in order to fully enjoy them. You can either take a hydrofoil out of Piraeus or go by air. There is also hydrofoil service between Santorini and Mykonos, the trip takes about 3 hours IIRC.

How much time will you have there? If only one or two weeks, I'd stick to Athens and at least four islands. I say four islands because it will give you some diversity. Mykonos is good for gay life and shopping, Santorini is beautiful and romantic. Ios is good for partying. Naxos is good for peace and quite. Corfu is lush and green.

I think you only need a day in Athens. A full day. Stay near the Plaka. The rest of Athens isn't all that interesting. All the sites to see in Athens are nearby and in the same area.

The north is great and very different. A personal favorite of mine was Meteora and Kalambaka. However, if you only have one or two weeks, I'd save it for another trip. That's what I did. The islands are the best part, in my opinion. If you like boats and the ocean like I do, I'd island hop by water. It's great meeting people on the boats as well. If you're short on time, though, you might want to take a few a plane rides. There's not high-speed service between all the islands. Some trips take a while. Have fun!

Had a 2 week business trip ending in Greece -- Athens was a relative bore.
After Madrid, Rome, and Catania, Athens was just 'meh'.
Except for a great restaurant in Aghi Theodori which was open-terraced to the Mediterranean Sea, there wasn't anything in or around Athens to write home about.
Spend your time on the islands.

PS: we stayed at the Athens Hilton.
I would NOT recommend it unless the idea of a $28 breakfast bar that can't match Big Boy appeals to you.

Well Santorini is one of the most beautiful of the Greek Isles, but not knowing where you are coming and going to, or how long you are staying, it is hard to advise. Most of the beautiful ads you see for Greece are from Santorini, it is best to have 3 minimum days there to do nothing but relax in the sun and pool and ocean, but the views from the cliffside villas are the best, save the beach for other locations. just hang and drink and exist while in Santorini.

Thanks guys! Great suggestions...I really appreciate it.

What about the logistics of island travel? Do they have boats running from major islands to major islands daily? Does Athens to Santorini and Santorini to Mykonos sound plausible? I will have about 9-10 days to do all of Greece, so I figured I'd spend a day or two in Athens and the rest in the islands.

    Again, thank y'all.
