Same-sex marriage becomes the law of the land in Iowa today, but out-of-state residents who are married here aren't likely to be afforded the same rights as heterosexual couples when they return home.

Iowa's lack of a residency law allows out-of-state gay and lesbian couples to join Iowans seeking marriage licenses at recorders offices across the state, starting this morning. State law calls for a three-day waiting period before the licenses can be used, although same-sex marriages will take place today if judges waive that provision.

I am going to sound like a complete asshole here, so forgive me Iowans.

But I shook my head in shame with South Africa had same-sex marriage before our country. Or when the many deeply Catholic nations of South America got domestic partnerships and we didn't.

And now that Iowa just hitched its first couple, I am so ticked off that my state of New York is way behind that lot of corn farmers.

I love you Iowans, I really do. I am just mad at all the blue dog dems in our state senate.

Same here! Here in New Mexico, domestic partnerships failed for the 7th year in a row. I think we are going for marriage equality now. F the state senate.

At last there is a reason to enjoy living in this godforsaken place. Iowa gay marriage is awesome. Iowa in general sucks.

I find it annoying and hypocritical how for some of you, the praise you have for the granting of SSM in Iowa is shadowed by your disdain for the state "growing corn" and having a rural farming population. It seems that stereotyping Iowa as a bunch of backwards farmers is no different from what the opponents of SSM in your states are doing towards the gay community.

Why the reservation following the congratulations? Is it because you're jealous or embarrassed? Is that really the mature emotion to show support? Perhaps you could better direct it towards those in your own "superior" states than belittle an agriculture state with a bigger history of civil rights than that of your own.

thanks, well said, Warrior! Iowa has a proud progressive tradition on par with our neighbors in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Looks like ill be moving some place like this, hell might find someone that actually knows what marriage is.

Str8 people take it for granted, lets see if homos don't since they finally have a chance to do so.

I, for one, will be eating corn tonight in honor of this. I don't think it's corn from Iowa, but it's the thought that counts.

Canada has had gay marriage for 5 years now-- although, I'm still not married myself, at the present time... Congratulations IOWA for upholding the rights of its lucky gay constituents to matrimonial togetherness.
