swimming lessons

    I like to swim but have a bit of a phobia about water. Yeah, sounds contradictory but I want to add swimming to my program.

    Took lessons and now I can swim well enough. However, underwater or diving is a big problem. I end up very angry and frustrated.

    So, I'm looking for ideas to improve my breathing. I'm looking for intense one-on-one lessons. Doesn't matter where -- I can fly there for a few days.

    Comments? Other ideas?

    Busyhank, I love the water, BUT--- I am afraid to swim. I have tried--been unsuccessful so far. I really need to overcome this fear. I love the ocean and my buds have to drag me out. This is a good post.

    I'm not qualified to offer advice about phobias, but I can tell you that open water is no place to be if you're dealing with them.
    Panic is extremely dangerous in the water. I've seen people go through expensive SCUBA lessons, buy expensive gear, and force themselves into the water because of the investment. That's when accidents happen.
    Sports are supposed to be about having fun. If you're not having fun, there is certain to be some other sport that's better for you.
    (Personally, I've found that I don't have fun dangling from cliffs by crampons or pitons lodged in crumbly ice and rotten rock. But I do have fun strapping on lead weights and throwing myself into cold murky water. Go figure.)

    well, my situation would probably be the same as yours. when i was teen, i spend a whole summer with friend in public pool. and thinking i could swim, i took on the advice from my friend and we swam to the deeper end of pool. in the mid way, i took a break because i couldnt' do breathing well, but i coun't touch the ground. so there i was, with all the right move of a swimmer but out of air. and I look like i could swim, so no one was coming in for me. long story short, I was saved and had a fear for water since.
    but now i train myself to swim, and I can do pretty well now. I'm training myself not to inhale too much at a time, treat it like breathign as normal. I think my recommendation for you is to get comfortable with water first. get a goggle, a nose clip, and take it easy. practice make perfect.

    well, I'm a water safety, lifeguard, and swim lessons instructor here in California. My advice is to be 100 percent comfortable in the water before you start. There can be no hesitation or fear in the pool, thats where most people I teach have problems in swim lessons. I suggest starting in a pool where you can stand, let water go up your nose, float on your back, let go of the wall and floor, just relax and learn to be comfortable (maybe where other people are around for safety reasons). icon_smile.gif

    Once you are comfortable in the water, then you can start lessons. I suggest one on one lessons with someone, that will get you done pretty quick.. but some places are too expensive, so be careful. Really look around!

    I've always been comfortable in the water but when I started triathlon training, I found that I would panic when swimming laps. Even though I have always water skied etc. I ended up joining a Masters Swim Team in my area. It sounded a little intimidating but decided to wing it. Through the team, I was able to hire someone for one on one lessons. It didn't take long at all before I was able to swim 2 miles per session.

    Mastering the breathing was my biggest problem. Once I was able to master it, it was a breeze.

    try the local YMCA, I worked for one, and visited several, their aquatics staff are usually some of the best instructors. If you dont like that, get in touch with your local red cross chapter, the ARC has the longest tradition of swim lessons and safety in the world. They can get you in contact with an instructor or a class.

    I love the water too, but I do panic when it is deep. I took swimming lessons but they said I ma a sinker. I took the lessons so my partner and I could scuba dive. We went diving for a couple years. Unfortunately I am an air whore. I run out much faster then everyone else. My problem is I drowned when I was 16. The paramedics said I actually died. They brought me back by shocking me. The last thing I remember when going under the last time was opening my eyes and feeling very relaxed. It was weird staring at the wall of water above me. The next thing was lying on the beach and having pain in my chest and people all around me. I love the water and the ocean so much but I am not sure if I will ever be comfortable. We haven't dived in about a year because last time I did have a major panic attack. The guide was awesome and talked me into staying in the water and finally going under. I was glad he did because it was beautiful. I love diving. I love seeing everything. It is so beautiful and full of life down there.
