I just saw it tonight and while, sure, I guess it's a good movie if you've only seen the previous X-Men movies and know nothing about the comics - I'm a total comic book (specifically X-Men) geek.

The general consensus among us fans is that there were too many misplaced mutants such as Emma Frost, Gambit, Kestrel, etc. who should really have probably made X3 or a sequel to X3 and the original storyline changes were just too extreme. icon_confused.gif

I mean c'mon - you turned Silverfox into Emma Frost's sister and gave her the ability of persuasion? Really?

Anyway, what was everyone's opinion of the movie?

Well, after making Silverfox Emma's sister(which I agree is pretty dumb), the persuasion isn't a stretch. Cordelia Frost is a persuasive empath so if they were going to squish those two characters together it makes a certain amount of sense if they want some continuity with Emma's family tree. Though I don't agree with the character mangling, I understand the writer's need to make Silverfox's powers more interesting to those that don't follow the comics.

I cringed through most of the film. The dialogue was pretty horrible and what was done to the characters was even worse...Blech!

Deadpool wasn't Deadpool, Emma wasn't Emma, Silverfox wasn't Silverfox and even Gambit wasn't really Gambit (the actor barely used an accent)...Very disappointing.

I really regret going to see it.

Wow. Was it really that bad? I've been debating whether I should see it or not. Guess I'll skip this movie and go to the next one on my list, Star Trek.

The movie as a movie itself was pretty good. The friends whom I came to see it with who have never read the comics and just saw the previous three films enjoyed it well enough.

You know - Since they came up with that stupid Phoenix explanation story line. I suspected things were going to go downhill. I guess I can wait for it on DVD. Thanks for the info

    Spoilers:

I don't think the comics have to be like the movies, especially because they ret-con so much. So I'll just leave that stuff alone. The writing is what KILLED me. Here are my examples:

After James Howlett was shot and the absurd "I am your father," moment, they ran into the woods, and Victor said, "they're coming!" Who the hell is coming? And why the hell would they really be coming after them? It is way too much of a stretch to consider them coming after them.

When Stryker says, "I can't kill him, but I can kill his memory." I wanted to die. How the heck do you make the leap that his brain might be repaired, but his memories wouldn't? It was a deus ex machina moment that was unnecessary. They could have left that stupid dialogue out, made him think that he killed Wolverine and have him walk away. The audience would be smart enough to realize that he had lost his memory when he got up and couldn't remember anything.

And Gambit did not have an accent, which was dumb. There were so many times when I just wanted to die.

I think that it was everything that used to make comic movies bad. This is pre-spiderman type of writing.

Don't think I agree with that. I go to see a movie like this in part to see how the characters are made live. I do expect them to remain true to the comics. Heck they did it for Watchmen and LOR I don't understand some of the crap they do sometimes. Just suppose when Superman was made into a movie they said he did not come from Krypton but was simply a human who was dipped into a vat of goo...

And Galactus being - well I don't know what da hell he was supposed to be in that FF movie!!!!!!!!

I'm an X-Men comic fan too. And I remember the hype 6 or 7 years ago when the Wolverine Origins limited series came out. It answered a lot of questions. From the first previews the movie followed that series. I think as the release date got closer and money was on the studio's mind, pressure was on for the movie to reach a wider audience. So that dark and rustic appeal got scraped for a campy, summer blockbuster. I could tell by the tv spots that the movie was going in a different direction than what was initially shown... sorta like X3. I'll probably have more to say after I see it this weekend.

Im a huge comic fan and I thought the movie was very good...B+...much better than X Men 3 which had the nerve to ruin the Phoenix story and simply kill of Cyclops like it was no big deal. That was a rotten movie.

I liked that there were tons of mutants in this..anyone catch Quicksilver in captivity? I know they did fiddle a bit with some of the mutants backstories but Im ok with that.

What would have been great was if Magneto also appeared in addtion to Prof X and said "Charles you cant have all of them" and was seen leading a group of mutants including Toad, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Mastermind in another direction.

I liked the movie. But i've never read the comics so I have nothing to base it on, which sounds like it's for the best. My only complaint was hugh jackmans booty shot. Why couldn't it have been Ryan Reynolds? Now that worth double admission price!

I never read X-Men comics so I can't judge how accurate the film was - but I guess ignorance is bliss because I enjoyed it. And Hugh Jackman's body is amazing - during a workout after seeing the movie, thinking about how good he looked motivated me to get in a few extra reps.

Hugh Jackman with his shirt off for half the film is the ONLY reason to go see this movie (and trust me, it is well worth the price of admission for that alone).... but as it has been stated many times before, the writing is horrible; and if it wasn't for Hugh, I probably would have walked out. I've seen better writing in high school plays. My suggestion: Wait for it to come on Direct TV, and speed thru the insipid dialogue until he takes his shirt off, then put it in slow mo and enjoy! LOL

I went in thinking i'd be blown away but was disappointed in the end. I've seen the X-men movies and liked the last two ALOT...i don't follow the comics so i dont know if/how they might have mangled which characters but i feel that the movie left me wanting more. That being said, its definitely, in my opinion, worth a watch...i'd even watch it again wiht a different group of ppl. I went in expecting an 11/10 and got a movie that was an 8 or 9/10...a very good move that could have been better.

Hugh Jackman is droolworthy, i wanted more of Ryan Reynolds, Lynn Collins (Kayla Silverfox) is easy on the eyes and does a decent job. Liev Schreiber fit his role well, The Gambit guy was passable...wanted more tricks and action from him.

I have accepted the fact that whenever they are going to make an X-Men movie they are going to fuck with the x-men cannon on ways that upset me. Here are just a few of my issues with this one.

All those mutants were locked up because they were infusing Weapon 11 with their powers, yet weapon 11 never used any of their powers... Had he used his super speed and ability to turn his skin diamond hard, maybe he wouldn't have gotten his head chopped off.

Wolverine didn't have claws prior to the weapon x experiments.

Emma Frost... one of the most powerful telepaths in the x-universe... but lets not focus on that... instead lets focus purely on the fact that she can change her skin to a diamond hard substance... a purely secondary power. I was so excited when I saw that Emma was going to be in this movie.. but after seeing it was sad that they didn't do her justice.

Ryan Reynolds should have been shirtless whenever he was on screen.

Gambit's signiture move has to do with throwing cards... he threw cards a whole once in the movie. Lame...

At the end when she told him to walk forever... she was touching his pant leg.

Much like with x-men 3, they introduced all these new random mutants and didn't develop any of them as characters... then we never see them again in any of the future x films.

All in all... I'm glad their making x-men movies... I just wish they would make them... better.

    Preach it.

I personally, think this was the worst of the X-Films so far. It had just too many plot holes and nameless faces thrown in and the script was crap.

apologies. i was working with outdated information it seems icon_smile.gif

[i]Wolverine's mutation also consists of animal-like adaptations of his body, including pronounced canines and three retractable claws housed within each forearm. While originally depicted as bionic implants created by the Weapon X program,[38] the claws are later revealed to be a natural part of his body.[39] The claws are not made of keratin, as claws tend to be in the animal kingdom, but extremely dense bone, and can cut substances as durable as most metals, wood, and some varieties of stone.[40] Wolverine's hands do not have openings for the claws to move through: they cut through his flesh every time he extrudes them, with occasional references implying that he feels a moment of intense pain each and every time he does so.[41]

I'm not a comic book junkie like most of you, and I too was not happy with the film. The dialogue was crap and it seemed like the movie was very cut and paste. Not good at all.
