Did Perez Hilton create an anti-gay monster with his big mouth?

Perez Hilton claimed that his gay marriage question as a judge cost Carrie Prejean the crown as Miss USA. He also called her a bitch and made other disparaging remarks following the pageant.

Now in retaliation she's suddenly emerged as a strong vocal opponent against gay marriage, being embraced by anti-gay conservative groups. It may cost her the First Runner-Up prize, but she doesn't seem to mind, as she becomes the center of re-energized anti-gay marriage efforts.

Question: do you think Perez Hilton's bitchy mouth did us more harm than good? And if so, is there anything we can do to minimize the damage he's causing?

Here's a Today Show piece on the controversy, though a few days old:

it´s quite possible: being unkind to people very rarely helps.

There are a few posters on RJ who don´t understand that...

I do not believe he is solely responsible for this latest wave of new anti-gay marriage stuff. I, however, do not believe he helped it either.

He definitely added fuel to their fire, but I wouldn't say he started it.

While he does have a decent education, he often times sounds like an uneducated rhinoceros with his banters and default usage of "cum, bitch, and cunt".

Perez has every right to speak for himself as a gay man but I'd prefer he not be the voice of the pro gay marriage debate. He should be content debating white shoes after labor day. I say PH and the larger media created a martyr with Ms California for NOM and the other groups but only by the coverage that followed the pageant. I mean, who watches pageants anyway?

    Hey,
Did anyone notice the Google banner ad for NOM just above this response? Gotta love meta technology.

I think the question was fine, but the ensuing controversy was totally blown out of proportion and was intentionally hyped up by Perez, since he's an attention-seeking whore lol. And ya, I think it's done basically only harm, in that it's re-ignited the steamy gay marriage debate once again, and has mobilized the religious right. Worse yet, I don't think many gay men or gay marriage allies want to mobilize around Perez Hilton...

There's enough room in the debate for Hilton and his ways. Maybe he'll wise up and expand on his deliberations and explain to the world exactly why the girl with the fake tits is a bitch. Fact is, she is a dumb bitch who behaves in the way she was brought up. No mind of her own, by her own admission. The debate needs to be moved into the arena of discussing exactly who are the players who are at odds. On the one hand, you have gay people, who have not picked a fight and on the other, you have people so obsessed with gay people that they have picked a fight. They've made it a very dirty fight and they need to be dealt with on their own level, where they understand things.

banners are randomly generated, even the position they appear is not the same right now. I believe the banners are generated after the first post and right on top of the last post.

as torontoguy said I dont see any problem with a question he asked. His bitchy personality is what pisses me off.

Well on the other hand .. the losing Miss CA ain't exactly the brightest bulb in the pack. Maybe that anti-gay organization she joined should add a few people from the Bush administration too. They need more representatives like that.

It is what it is .. a controversy

NOMs next commercial should be "There's a Bobble Head Coming" (these are the folks that did "There's a Storm Coming").

Perez used the pageant. She used the pageant. Both are wrong to do this, in our humble opinion.

This girl is the new Anita Bryant. Remember her? heheh

Here's the thing. Is a failed beauty queen really the best that the right can do? If it is, then they look dumb.

Didn't work last time, I give her five minutes.

Perez Hilton is only about himself and his sense of relevance. The whole controversy over this non-issue would become irrelevant if HRC and other GLBT rights groups would put out an ad or a statement that discredits Perez Hilton as too extreme and an unfair antagonist.

It reminds me of how the Environmentalist Movement took off in the 1970s as an in-your-face movement that turned off the casual American. It took the movement about 30 years (a whole generation) to get the green agenda to be viewed as a cool thing. Just think how long it's going to take the Gay Rights agenda to recover if we continue to hear the likes of Perez Hilton.

I was about to say just that. Maybe when the anti-gay marriage brigade is crushed she will die out with them too.

Or at least one can hope.

His question was entirely appropriate and to discuss her answer is also so, what was inappropriate was the commentary he had based on that answer.
Instead of being grounded, candid, but carefully considered, he came off as
    blunt, loud, disrespectul...

He could have aided the "gay cause" by a reasoned approach.. instead
his was the face of a "radical" (as seen by those who's opinions might be swayed if a a more grounded approach had been given)

I think Perez Hiltion is more harmful than helpful in general. It's unfortunate that his words/actions reflect on the gay community as a whole.

If Perez Hilton was as smart a man as he thinks he is he would be able express his opinion with out resorting to calling someone a dumb bitch or any name calling..

If I was the leader of a Gay Rights Group I would have come out against what he said.. Everyones staying mute so it makes it look like we all agree with what he said.

Lean, I have to agree w/you about this being a larger issue that shows she is a big fake. Kinda the whole show is a really, really, really big fake out. I know, it's only becoming obvious now to those of us that tried to give them a grain of usefulness. I think the whole boob thing is gonna have a effect on the show also.
