David Souter... what an interesting man.. his upbringing.. his pick by George HW Bush and turning out be a "left" leaning member of the supreme ct.

But now with his exit, do you think Obama will pick a "liberal" left leaning
individual or one who is more flexible and centrist as the Souter "replacement"?

Personally, I think he will try and pick someone who is much like he is.. flexible, reasoned, open minded.. and very much in the "right to choose" camp.....

I just wish one of the conservative members needed to be replaced.. I'd love to see the sweat rolling down the faces of the right wingers....

Well, he's going to tick people off no matter who he picks. Already there are groups demanding the nominee be a woman or latino. The Republicans will hate anyone he picks, but he's going to draw a lot of fire from different liberal interests too. Personally, I think the only way to make everyone happy, except the right wingers, is to find leftist Lesbian Latina.

I've seen the reports thus far and the jockying for position to see if he will more than likely nominate a woman, an American of latin descent, a black American, etc... I would hope that whomever he nominates understands that the constitution was created to protect the minority from the majority, understands that interpretation of the law DOES NOT equal legislation from the bench and it is someone who has practiced law, been a judge at some level and has a wide ranging sight that encompasses all of America.

I have no idea how the Obama administration plans on finding Souter's replacement. I just hope it finds a reasonable, progressive candidate it then nominates regardless of "partisan- / non-partisanship" concerns.

I am joining the pro-lesbian dark-skinned Latina woman camp though. The Court could use more representative variety after Bush's pale-skinned nominations (excluding the Miers debacle). A lesbian Native American woman would also be cool.

You can read about what Obama had to say about choosing a replacement at the daily press conference on Friday here.

But, it has been the media that has been blabbing about gender and race. Gender and race are easy to digest topics and aren't upsetting to viewers like opinions on choice or state secrets or any of the dozen other issues that will be the actual important stuff of being on the SCOTUS.

Obama has political capital to burn. He can nominate a side of beef and not have a hard time not getting it confirmed.

I, for one, would be disappointed if some beef got nominated to the Court, only to be hidden under a black robe.

And yes, I will just keep making stupid jokes on this thread. It's sort of my M.O.

Better than the side of beef that most recently got onto the court that hides under a white robe and hood on the weekends.

I saw a poll on CNN today that indicated that 45% (a plurality) of Americans wanted a "moderate-leaning" court - as opposed to a "liberal" or "conservative" one.

It's worth pointing out that to get a moderate leaning-court, we need a few justices to Souter's left.

To counter the "bombs" that Bush put in we need someone to the left of Moveon.org

Surprising that nobody mentioned that Souter pretty much has to be gay.

To offset the right leaning current Court, I would prefer a screaming liberal. But, I expect Obama to pick a middle-of-the-roader.

Michelle Obama would be a good choice !

Just remember. No matter how bad it looks now, it could have been worse... Harriet Miers could have been chief justice...
