Well... it's a good thing FOX isn't trying to spin it or anything. icon_rolleyes.gif

No... I don't think there's anything particularly bad about the study.

I am amused by the way FOX frames their discussion of it though. That's what the eye-rolling was about.

I wonder why they decided to carry out their research in Argentina. I imagine they would find willing participants in any number of US cities.

As for the $125,000 in indirect costs mentioned at the end of the article: those go to the university. All universities negotiate an indirect cost agreement with government granting agencies (the NSF, NIH, NASA, etc.). It's typically about 50% of the amount of money the researcher needs to carry out the project and its used for general operational costs.

Here's the key to the whole thing.

"That means NIH researchers will have as many as 730 nights on the town for careful observation and interaction."

Interaction is a typo. It's supposed to be "intercourse".

"The National Institutes of Health are paying researchers to cruise bars in Buenos Aires to find out why gay men engage in risky sexual behavior while drunk."

OK, and straight people don't? How many people do you know that's straight has had a one night stand or how many bimbo bleach blonde girls use "Omg, I am sooooooo drunk!" as part of their mating call to attract those horny buff jock guys? Puleeze, risky sex is alive and kicking in the straight community too. As it is, they should fund studies into how many of today's youths are left overs from one night stands?
