Would you help a complete stranger URINATE?

I have lived in a bunch of countries and sometimes forget how I am supposed to react according to American culture and social rules.

The other day when I was taking a leak at a gas station urinal, an elderly man and his grandson came in. The grandson, who was around 5 years old, went into a stall. The grandfather, who was around 80, stood at the urinal next to me.

It was obvious from where I was standing that the old man was having difficulty trying to undo his zipper. His sight was not good, nor was his motor skills. He couldn't grasp the zipper. His hands were shaky.

About the time he got his zipper down, he had already starting urinating on himself. His penis was still inside his pants. He was wetting his pants down to his shoes.

I don't think the man ever managed to get his penis out. He was embarrassed to walk back out with his grandson, but joked about it. Unfortunately, he had soaked one pants leg all the way down.

My question to everyone is....what would you have done?

    I did nothing.

However, the thought did cross my mind to reach over and try to help the old man before he wet himself too much. I just figured that legally and culturally, it would not have been a good idea to reach over to a complete stranger to help him pull his penis out, even with the best of intentions.

Unfortunately his grandkid wasn't old enough. A family member would have been most suitable.

Anyway, what would you have done?

Well let me say we do discuss about everything on RJ don't we?

But you bring up an important topic and that is, what is considered to be "assistance" and what could be considered "inappropriate" or the old gentleman might have thought you were assaulting him in some manner.

You could have ask him if he needed help or assistance, but he might have been embarassed or indignant. He wasn't in jeopardy and I would have done the same as you. I would have thought, "how sad" and moved along.

If he had been in pain or clearly uncomfortable, that would perhaps encourage you to take action... to call 9/11 or whatever was deemed needed.

By the way.... what a way to start on the forums with your first post...
    LOL...

Next time we all know TO ASK. The least we can do to help a fellow human being. Thanks for this unique post. Food for thought at a minimum. icon_confused.gif

It would have been awfully funny if you helped him and then he offered to help you in return...

Having my grandad be in similar situations like this, albeit with me there to help, i dont think i would have hesitated to ask if the elderly gentleman would have needed help. I know it sounds weird but *shrug* what can you say - i certainly wouldnt have taken delight in it though.

I used to be a nurses aide, i helped people poop and pee and vomit and shower and eat, so i'd just ask him if he needed any help and if he does, then not a problem! icon_smile.gif

    Very strange post! LOL!
But no, I would not offer to help the old one. He must know that he has this issue.
If one is unfortunate enough to be in this position, why humiliate oneself? Have a bloody bit of pride. icon_confused.gif
There are garments they can wear to prevent these......issues.

well i have beef with many a social norm, but i guess i can understand this one (for some people's personal space, y'know). i wouldn't have reacted either, but i would definitely think to.
