If the RNC really does that "Democratic Socialist Party" nonsense, I think the Democrats should promptly brand them the "Republican Fascist Party." Actually the best course of action might be to sue them on some level, and possibly penalize the Repugs in legislative bodies in some way for not using the legal name.

But I'm waiting for the Republican supporters here to come to the defense of this crap, as they always do no matter what. I begin to wonder about their legitimacy.

It's like a web site for the NAACP, where people would join saying they are Black, and then start posting stuff in defense of KKK racial discrimination. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I understand opinions are opinions, but self-destructive ones? I smell some rats...

I loved the bestiality argument. A guy brought that up to me once and I said "So you view women as beasts?" You should have seen the look on his face as he tried backing out of that one.

It´s not hard to understand. According to conservative christians God gave them a book of rules and if you don´t obey the rules then the baby Jesus cries and then sends you to hell.

The problem is that the bible is not a book of rules, but a collection of texts with lots of different purposes. Some of it is in fact rules, but they are ignored unless convenient (the mosaic law). The New Testament is a collection of letters, biographies and narrative and an apocalypse (which was a common Jewish genre). So how do you make this into a book of rules?

If you are catholic then you ask the pope. If you are evangelical then you claim it´s just the plain reading of the text, but you are really just following what the famous preachers are saying, as can be seen from the fact that the plain reading and therefore the rules change every now and again.

It does not occur to them that it´s possible to make responsible ethical decisions without the book of rules and so you get the fear and "slippery slope" arguments (perhaps these people DO want to marry turtles and only fear of the baby Jesus burning them forever in hell has stopped them).

So it´s very scary for them.

Most scary of all "opposite marriage" icon_lol.gif (hetero marriage) may lead to gay children! icon_eek.gif you would think someone would ban it wouldn't you?

That brings back such bad memories to me of the 1950s. We had national air raid drills with sirens blaring, and as schoolchildren we had to do exactly what you saw there, hiding under our desks. Or my parents had to pull over their car, and we were all required to get out and seek out some indoor shelter to hide.

"Tony knows the bomb can explode anytime of the year, day or night." No wonder kids from that era developed a high incidence of neuroses. I remember little children running around & screaming in terror during these drills, not the placid scenes shown in those films.

One girl in my class became hysterical, yelling we were all going to be killed by "torpedoes." I tried to explain to her that torpedoes were only used in the ocean, not against school houses, but she was inconsolable. Stupid Republican Administration, traumatized a whole generation with their paranoia, that continues to this day.

Thanks for that historical perspective Vespa. Did that little girl later go on to become Ms. California?? icon_lol.gif

In the 1950s, gasoline-powered sirens were towed down the streets, because fixed sirens couldn't reach everyone. There were also trucks that had large megaphone speakers mounted to their roofs, that both blared a siren sound, and ordered people to seek immediate shelter.

I couldn't find a pic of a truck with the roof-mounted horns, but here's what the trucks themselves looked like, plus the siren trailers. As a young boy in the early 1950s, I would be very frightened when theses things rode around, screeching away at ear-piercing sound levels, and basically telling us to run for our lives.

Why do people use gay marriage for the slippery slope argument or people wanting multiple partners in marriage when that argument can already be made starting with straight marriages?

If you let a man marry a woman, then why not multiple women, or a rabbit, right?

See that was easy to do.

I would think you'd be able to come up with something more interesting than how the right wing conservatives think and you like to bash Christianity. It's all so old!

Remember the Cuban missile crisis in '63? When the drill sirens went off, Mom took us outside and sat us in a line on the curb while others were going to their basements or the bomb shelter.

    Why?

Mom: "If they drop a nuclear bomb on us it'll be better if we all go together in a flash. What is Mrs Roe and her kids come to our fallout shelter (we didn't have one) two days afterwards begging for food? How would I say no? What if the whole neighbourhood does? We'd all die horribly in a week"

My wild and rebel Mom! heheh By the way we were in Winnipeg at the time, so yeah, we were ground zero for all the world's warheads..icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif
