cats will teach themselves things by mimicking our behavior (open doors, turn lights on etc.)

and cats retain memory better as well, and cats can be taught tricks, they just dont see the point in doing them unless they get something in return, like a treat, where as a dog will just blindly do it if it know a trick.

and why must ppl argue of which is better, they both make great pets, both offer lifelong companionship.

ultimately i want one dog and two cats, i like them both, but i will always believe that cats are smarter then dogs

If I had the power to do one great thing for this island Oz. It would be to rid it of cats, because they are destructive murders of our native wildlife.

You can believe what you want, but science doesn't lie in this case. Your belief is flawed. Cats are not smarter than dogs.

And besides human beings, cats are the only other mammal that regularly kills animals for the mere pleasure. In most cases, domesticated felines do not eat their prey, they merely kill it. Dogs can do this, but it's a rare event.

Check this out. It's happening all over the world, but here's the first example I found online:
CAMPAIGN TO RID CONTINENT OF CATS DIVIDES AUSTRALIANS.

the science i read shows differently, everywhere you can find contradiction arguments. there is going to be a report from one person that shows one thing and another report that shows something else.

Not to be too much of a prick, but you're wrong (and see my edited comment above). I'm not going to argue the issue, anymore. However, I do think you need to do your research before you make blind statements like that.

    2 things:

    1) Mmmmm.... what an unmitigated piece of emotionally driven dreck that "news" story is.

    2) Dog or cat, just don't allow them to be together. They'll plot to take over the world. Just look at the shady looks on their faces:

They've GOT to be planning something.

if you didnt want to argue why did you attack me then?

and this is an issue of pure choice, this is a quote from the "best known expert of the intelligence of dogs"

"If you're a Cat Person, you know that cats are smarter because they're independent and clean, and they have an uncanny sense of where they are and how to get home. If you're a Dog Person, you know that dogs are smarter because they're easier to train."

    So...

anyone else seeing the irony involved in the dog's attempt to protect the second dog actually resulting in a greater risk of that second dog dying?

I'm quoting this message because of the incredible cuteness of HotToddy's puppy dog and kitty cat. If only I could take a picture of my dogs, Astro and Godiva, nuzzled up next to me in bed right now. D'OH!

but thats not how a dog thinks..

While even at our worst we can rationalise a situation and understand that these people are here to help, a dog doesn't, it's immediate reaction is to protect its mate from getting hurt more..

dogs are pack animals, just like men..

Very tempting, but my first choice of pet is a dog. Scratch that, my first choice is a husband so that he can take care of the eventual dog.

I ditto that sentiment. Then again, I also think he sorta looks like you lilTanker.

It is the whole intense eyes that he has, and what I imagine your own eyes to be as well. That's doubly hot in my book.

Unmitigated? What qualifier are you looking for? NYTimes won't work for you, huh? Okay.

In the Museum of Natural History NYC, there is an interesting tutorial on the subject. According to one of the world's preeminent institutions for science, feral and domesticated cats are responsible for the extinction of over 100 species of birds in the UK alone. I don't recall the exact number, but I want to say it's close to 160 species in England, Ireland and Scotland.

Here's a mention of cats in the "Introduction of Exotic Species" section of AMNH's Web site that illustrates the impact cats have on the environment:

    http://www.amnh.org/nationalcenter/Endangered/causes.html

    citation:
"the most destructive effects have occurred on islands, where introduced insects, CATS, pigs, rats, mongooses, and other non-native species have caused the grave endangerment or outright extinction of literally hundreds of species during the past 500 years (see Hawaiian Birds)."

    The NYTimes is dreck? Really?

There are literally dozens of news articles in major print publications alone that have covered "cats as invasive species" stories. NYTimes, Globe & Mail, The Guardian, Nat. Geo ... so you can believe what you want, but I'm interested in the pursuit of truth. Nothing more. Anything outside of that is dreck.
