If you could choose a band or artist, one dead (or with a dead member) and one alive, to play for you in your current living room and play one song... who would perform it and what would the song be? You have to take into consideration the size of the band and the noise level. For example, perhaps The Clash or The Stones might not be the best choice as they are pretty damn loud and wouldn't really excel in a small room. And if you have a massive living room, then fine.

For a dead artist I would have Jeff Buckley play me Hallelujah (Jimi Hendrix "Hey Joe" and Nina Simone "Here Comes the Sun" are close seconds). Yeah it's fairly corny but I love the song and I think he delivers it in mind blowing fashion. It sends shivers down my back. Listen to this version (I can't embed it)...

For an living artist I would choose Southern California by The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson.

    What about you guys?

This was a tough one but

    for a dead band
The Beatles - Across the Universe

    Alive
The original cast from spring awakening - totally fucked

I don't know if that counts as a band, but i love that song and the cast
    if it doesn't, then

regina spektor - consequence of sound....or jimmy eat world- chase this light.

it would be a tough call. btw jeff buckley hallelujiah is a great choice *two thumbs up*

Broken up (so not technically dead): Minor threat or Splender (accoustic set)

Alive: Jacks Mannequin or ill settle for just having Andrew Mcmahon play an intimate set solo with his piano

Across the universe is one of my favorite songs. Do you like Rufus' cover?

Althought I don't always like them more than the originals I think Rufus Wainwright does very good covers.

No lie...I had these guys in mind before getting to that part of your post. Good choices! Only...

"Dead" artist: Brian Wilson. OK...that's harsh, but I want the 1965 version. SMiLE had the potential to shift the demand for American rock to a more jazzy, almost showtune and orchestral core for years if not decades. The Brits may have even been following us more than we followed them for a good long time. But since shelving that album, his work has all been a bit tragic (SMiLE with The Wondermints the exception). Song?: Hmm...not his most challenging work, but Don't Worry Baby would sound nice. Or Sloop John B.

Have you seen this site? It's great reading while actually listening.:
Deconstruction of a Few Beach Boys Songs

I think Elliot Smith would be a good choice for "real dead" guy to have play. "Angeles" maybe.

Alive?: Well, if he'd sleep with me, the lead from Reckless Kelly (any song). Otherwise, probably Dr. Dre. (something new). Say what you will about his persona, but the guy is a brilliant artist and producer.

    Fun topic.

And also Gabriela Robin.. though I don't know what I would have her sing......

    Or... Hmmm.... Too many choices.

Alive: Doris Day, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Josh Groban or Elton John.

btw: check out Ivri Lider on YouTube. His version of "I've Kissed A Girl" is haunting and memorable.
