For quite a few years I hunted deer, primarily in the southeast, with an old Marlin 30-30 lever gun. As life progressed and I became financially secure, I began hunting all over the world, occasionally returning home to hunt deer with the old 30-30. In that time I purchased big game rifles in 375 H&H, 458 Winchester, and a few other calibers.

I did not however purchase the venerable 30-06. What do you guys think of the old round?

Never shot one, but remember selling them when I worked in a sporting goods department after school.

I think shooting a squirrel with one is a little bit overkill icon_rolleyes.gif ok A LOT overkill

Now I feel like shooting a TV sometimes .. maybe he saw [a] FOX??

I've never fired a 30-06, but with my flinching, I'd probably hate it. I did once shoot an ancient 30-30 with iron sights at the 100 yard range, seated on a shooting bench, gun resting on a sandbag, and my first shot was three inches from the bullseye. The second and third shots weren't even on paper.
