Cassein protein

  • May 20, 2009 2:42 AM GMT
I've been taking 100% whey after workouts for a long time now, and have been reading that cassein is a better slow acting protein and that a combination of the two is the way to go. I haven't been able to find any cassein protein online. Any body have any suggestions for brands, etc?

Muscle Milk is a Cassein protein that should be readily available:

Most night time proteins contain cassein protein as they are recommended to last all night while you sleep.

Check out Vitamin Shoppe-they're online as well. I use Pro V60 - a blended protein mix of whey and casein.

    Health Benefits

Cow's milk, the basis for all other dairy products, promotes strong bones by being a very good source of vitamin D and calcium, and a good source of vitamin K--three nutrients essential to bone health. In addition, cow's milk is a very good source of iodine, a mineral essential for thyroid function; and a very good source of riboflavin and good source of vitamin B12, two B vitamins that are necessary for cardiovascular health and energy production.

Cow's milk is also a good source of vitamin A, a critical nutrient for immune function, and potassium, a nutrient important for cardiovacular health.

Milk produced by grass fed cows also contains a beneficial fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Researchers who conducted animal studies with CLA found that this fatty acid inhibits several types of cancer in mice. In vitro (test tube) studies indicate this compound kills human skin cancer, colorectal cancer and breast-cancer cells. Other research on CLA suggests that this beneficial fat may also help lower cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis.

I use Syntha 6 - from BSN products. You can get it at Vitamin Shoppe. It has several flavors and is delicious. My favorite is Chocolate Mint, followed by Vanilla because I can add strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, bannanas, ect.

So, this protein blend has whey, egg protein and casein. Also has heart healthy fats, fiber and an amino acid profile. I take it pre-workout if I have not already had a protein rich snack, post-workout and before bed.

    I love it! icon_razz.gif

I would keep the whey protein for after workouts. After you beat the shit out of your muscles you need some quick absorbing protein and whey is great for that.

Before bedy bye time though I keep a tub of casein for those months when I am bulking up (HULK SMASH!).

I am not as sophisticated as some and do not know a nighttime protein from a late afternoon protein or a late morning but not quite afternoon protein.

Personally, I buy a bunch of eggs and cottage cheese. I boil the eggs. When I get hungry, I either eat an egg or I eat some cottage cheese. Both great protein sources. If I am still hungry, I eat another egg or some more cottage cheese. The cheapest form of great protein you can buy dollar for dollar ounce for ounce. Both low in fat but high in good stuff.

I eat other things but that is the basis of my diet. Want to get bigger? Eat more. Want to get smaller, eat less. Workout more, workout less. It is not rocket science.

Casein is a great thing to take before sleep, if I'm out of it I'll have cottage cheese, pretty much the same thing.
