protein shakes, creatine, and supplements, oh my!

    So, I've been working out for a few years now and I still seem to be rather skinny. A friend and I want to start bulking up. I wouldn't necessarily mind starting supplments (or whatever) of some sort but am rather unknowledgable and distrustful of the whole thing. As of this moment, I do absolutely nothing outside of just working out (which is only about 2x a week).

    What's a very basic/simple/no side effect thing i could start using? Or should I just work out more?

    1. You need to increase your caloric intake by eating more
    2. Whey protein will be beneficial, but not as much as you think.
    3. Creatine does work to increase muscle mass. The effect is not that great.
    4. At your age you need to do resistance exercise at least three or four times a week. You need to do compound exercises like bench press, squats, deadlifts and such. Compound exercises will built more muscle than isolation exercises like curls.
    5. Don't overdo the cardio. Excessive cardio results in muscle being catabolized for energy
    6. You need to read more about building mass so you know the proper number of exercises, sets and reps to do. Read about proper diets, caloric intake, the good foods and the bad foods.
    7. Last but not least is "the juice" a topic that always comes up. This is a very complex area and you really need to be knowledgeable to stay out of trouble.
    8. Unfortunately not all individuals are genetically programmed to develop muscle. It can be frustrating if your friends make huge gains and your stuck at the same weight. Just don't give up.
    9. What you need to know far exceeds what I can say in one post. There are volumes of information on the net and in books about building mass

    Eat.
    Lift.
    Do HIIT.
    Rest.
    Repeat.

    Oh Dorthy please, just kick the shit out of Toto, Auntie Em, and Uncle Henry. Pour water on TinMan, set fire to Scare Crow, and slap the hell out of Cowdarly Lion. Then turn all that muscle on those 2 bitches from east and west, evil bitches! Also, smash those little muchkins, dam they piss me off--Take the Grand Wizard himself, and throw his legs up over you shoulders, and your off to see the Wizard the wonderfule Wizard of OZ!

    Take the time. Do the research. Most any supplement only builds the bank account of the seller, not your muscles. Most are 99.999% a waste of money. Eat well. Lift hard. Then eat well again.
