Please, this is SOP for FOX. Complaining will have no effect whatsoever. Not watching their programing and not buying their sponsors might get their attention, but gays have never managed any effective boycott. Learn to live with it.

I love So You Think You Can Dance.. but I was not offended... I thought the same thing myself... but still liked the guys and honestly this is maybe just the start for main street america to see guy on guy dancing icon_biggrin.gif and I am all for that...!

You can be offended if they were not allowed to continue on based on the fact that it was two males or because one was gay. The bombed the second round for choreography.

TheGuyNextDoor saidMiasma pal, you know you're my buddy, but I have to keep it real as Randy Jackson would say.. I watched this episode on TV tonight and that did not offend me at all. I also re-watched the link you added to see if I missed something and I think they were very honest about those guys talent.. They even gave them a second chance even after falling. Simon and the other judges remarks did not hit chord in me. I thought they tried to be somewhat nice to the pair. Their opinion is being way over blown. This sounds like Perez Hilton speak to me. http://perezhilton.com/2009-05-22-homophobia-on-so-you-think-you-can-dance#respond
Sorry bud. Still love ya, but not exactly sure what I'd be complaining about..icon_cool.gif

I have to agree with GND. I watched and was actually surprised that they showed the audition complete with the behind the scenes of showing how the guys became a pair. I don't see Nigel as being homophobic or those comments being homophobic since the comments were related to dancing and not them personally. I hope this doesn't backfire.

Is it wrong that I wasn't offended by what the judge said in the video? icon_confused.gif

At first when I read it seemed awkward... but in the video he kinda said those things in the context of what they were judging and the judge seemed genuinely uncomfortable and tried to navigate his way through what he wanted to say to the dancers and what he knew would get him in this kind of hot waters.

With a little effort I can feel offended by the twitt he wrote later, but then again I've heard sooooo much Brokeback Mountains jokes it already got old, and it doesn't help that that movie frustrates me to no end (Grrr... why didn't they just got together?!)

We can see how it can be construed as offensive, but Nigel was decent enough to focus on the "dancing" and not the "OMG TWO GUYS WHAT IS THIS?"

There is more to the story.

    http://www.afterelton.com/blog/michaeljensen/so-you-think-you-can-knok-off-homophobia-nigel

Misha told AfterElton.com that there was even worse said that Fox didn't show. Here are his comments.

More of what the judges said:

It was more offensive than what they showed. Nigel said that he's not sure that the fathers watching this at home would be encouraged to take their sons to allow them to learn to dance. Nigel told me that they [the show] has spent all these seasons trying to build up the idea that a male can dance and make it more acceptable, and we didn't really help the cause.

I told him that I have a father, too, and I went through that. I told him that the country is already going through a lot of changes and could handle some more. Nigel didn't say anything to that.

The judges kept going on about a man and a woman and I kept correcting them that it was a leader and a follower.

Nigel asked me after the choreography round, how I liked dancing with a girl and I said, "I've been ballroom dancing since I was twelve, so I've been dancing with girls my whole life." It was very inappropriate and the only reason they advanced us wasn't to see if we could improve or be versatile, but was to make us dance with girls.

On how the producers treated them:

The judges were mean, but the producers and the staff were super supportive. Cat Deely was great. Did a long interview with her that she didn't show.

One woman told us we had broken a glass ceiling.

    What Misha told the judges:

I told Sonya I didn't understand how one man reaching for another man is in any way feminine. It was super inappropriate. Dancing is an art form and is about the dancing and not about two men or two women. It's about expressing yourself through movement.

    His thoughts about what happened:

We're fighting for equality in this country and the right to marry and the right to adopt, so why the f--k can't we dance together?

I told them ballroom dancing is very popular in the gay community and is a sport. It's part of the World Outgames and Mitchel and I are going to compete in Copenhagen in July.

As a British citizen, Nigel totally put this country down by saying we're not ready for this.

Fox owes me an apology for how they treated me as a gay man. I've never been so proud and offended at the same time as I was that night. Mitchel said he's never been so offended either and didn't know how to react to that kind of bigotry. He'd never been oppressed like a minority. He felt very angry.

    I wasnt offended at all.

If you want to see more of his reaction with same sex couples, look at the previous season where two of the choreographers were a male same sex couple and very famous dancers in their style - they got showered with compliments which seemed - to me - to be genuine.
