In Honor of Memorial Day....

Monday, May 25th, is Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. However, since 9/11, it has come to mean for many, a time to also remember and honor those who have fallen because of war and those who are serving today.

I want to take this time and opportunity to recognize not only the men and women serving in our country and around the world, but more specifically to our soldiers who are gay and lesbian. While it must be an unimaginable stress level to be at war, I can only imagine how it must be for some who are gay. I thank them for their service and I want them to know they are not alone in that service. While I firmly believe that DADT will be repealed, for those who are actively serving in the military who are gay and for those who have come home who are gay….THANK YOU!!!!

There are a couple for military men that I have come across on Real Jock and I want to acknowledge them and there service:

C.J. Johnson-who is currently stationed in Iraq and has been in the military as of this year 16 years, half of his life.

    Kscott6671-Served two tours in Iraq.

    And also, Lt. Dan Choi.....

There are others who I requested permission to name them here, but they did not get back to me so although I honor them, I also respect this bit of privacy for them.

I never agreed with the war, but you have served or are there serving and you have my full support to the end. Here then, is my tribute, Josh Groban and Heather Headley with the Gay Mens Chorus of Washington, D.C. singing “My Country Tis of Thee.”

If you know of other real jock members who are military or are military yourself....Thank you and say a few words of thanks to the guys I mentioned above and let us know if there are others.

This is for our American cousins- those brave people, those who, especially now that there is no draft, have volunteered for one of the most honorable and perilous things a person can do for their country.

    We salute you all.

For all of the gay men and women who have served this country honorably but have been kicked out based on their sexual orientation, I honor you as well as all my straight brothers and sisters who have served this great country. Your service benefits us all and for that I am forever grateful.

What gratifies me most is the great change I've witnessed in the US between the 1960s and now. Back then we soldiers were advised to wear our uniforms off-post as little as possible, to avoid insults & harassment in the civilian community. We were called "baby killers" and such by them.

Now it's 2009, and on an intrinsically more liberal gay social site I'm reading all this praise of the military. Indeed how times have changed, and also how stereotypes of gays are once again proven wrong. I couldn't find more touching, flattering & supportive remarks about the military in the most right-wing & straight sites on the Internet.

Thank you, Erik, and thank all of you for your kind words. icon_biggrin.gif
